Marauders lose another close one to division leader Holland Patent

HOLLAND PATENT – Before their game with Holland Patent on Tuesday, Sherburne-Earlville had played in nine games with seven being decided by a difference of nine points or less. Tuesday’s game added yet another one to this category.
However, the Marauders were on the losing end of this one as the division leader Golden Knights topped the visiting team 59-56.
The contest for S-E was a tale of two halves. The first half was the story of missed shots and committed too many turnovers.
Despite outscoring the Golden Knights in the first eight minutes of play, the Marauders miscues allowed for a 21 point quarter by Holland Patent in the second.
“We didn’t play well in the first half,” said Sherburne-Earlville head coach Kevin Vibbard. Holland Patent is in first place in our division as they are undefeated in the league. You can’t beat a good basketball team only playing a half of basketball.”
Down 12 at the half, S-E knew that they needed a comeback effort in order to top their opponent.
And as they have done many times in the early portion of the season, they put together strong second half rally. One in large part due to the play of Hunter Lane.
Lane scored 10 of the Marauders 20 points in the third quarter as they closed the 12 point gap down to two.
In the final stanza, Lane knocked down four three’s while teammate Sylas Swingle drained two of his own, keeping S-E within an arms length as the two of them combined for 18 of the Marauders 19 fourth quarter points.
The Golden Knights, however, scored 20 in the final eight minutes. Holland Patent went to the charity stripe 15 times in the fourth, hitting eight to maintain the lead and take in the win over the Marauders.
Lane finished with game-high 22 points, all coming in the second half comeback by Sherburne-Earlville. Swingle added nine and Tyler Bigford chipped in eight points in the loss.
Holland Patent had balanced scoring from the team as three scored in double-digits. Josh Ernst led the Golden Knights with 16.
Sherburne-Earlville travels to Cooperstown Saturday for an afternoon game. Cooperstown will be looking to revenge the one point loss the Marauders handed to them in the first game of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
