Meigs breaks school scoring record in Vikings win over Afton
AFTON – Amber Meigs scored 20 points to lead Otselic Valley to a win over Afton on the the road on Wednesday. With her game total, Meigs will now be enshrined in the Vikings record books as she became the school’s girls basketball scoring record.
The previous record was 1,367 over a varsity career. Now the senior holds the tally at 1,372 with a good amount of basketball still to be played in her final season of play.
The two teams went back and forth over the first two quarters with Otselic Valley holding a slight 10-7 lead after one. The Crimson Knights pulled within one point before the intermission.
But it was Meigs who took over after the break, scoring 10 of her 20 points for the Lady Vikings in the third quarter to give the visiting team a six point lead after three. The five point difference after the that quarter prove to be the pivotal point in the win for Otselic Valley.
Afton’s Casey East ended the night with a double-double, scoring 10 points while grabbing 11 boards in the loss.
OV’s youngster Grace Costa contributed eight points in the win while Megis pulled in 12 rebounds, adding a double-double to a historic night of her basketball career. Her teammate, Cassie Agren grabbed 11 off the backboard as well.
The Lady Vikings are again on the road tonight as they head to McGraw in a league contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. start.
