Tough home loss for the Blackhawks on Thursday; Other local sports coverage throughout the county

OXFORD – Turnovers and missed shots caused by the clinging, persistant defense of the Delhi Bulldogs handed the Blackhawks a loss at home on Thursday night.
Oxford kept the game within reach after the first as the they were down by three. But the turnovers caused by the Bulldogs allowed the Blackhawks to only add four points to their tally, helping Delhi extend the lead to 23-11 by the half.
Nate Craft scored 25 points, more than half of the Bulldogs point total with 11 of his points coming at the foul-line. The Bulldogs as team were 15-for-22 for free-throws.
The Blackhawks were led by Jason Davis’ nine points on the offensive end. Teammate Brad Beckwith added seven and C.J. Smith chipped in with five in the loss.
Oxford will look to rebound Wednesday, January 17 when they travel the Bainbridge-Guilford for a MAC league match-up.

Unadilla Valley 63, Deposit/Hancock 47
DEPOSIT – The second quarter was the difference in the game as the Storm took down the host Deposit/Hancock Eagles Thursday night.
UV’s Levi Rifanburg accounted for 10 of his teams 19 in the first stanza of action as the Storm led 19-12.
In the span of the second eight minutes, Unadilla Valley went on a 21-9 run behind Andrew Jackson’s nine and Dante Dye’s six from beyond the three-point line, giving them a 19 point lead at the break.
Coming out of the intermission, Rifanburg continued to pour in the point, nearly outscoring the Eagles by himself as he added 13 to his alreaady impressive tally. He finished the night with a double-double, recording 25 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Jackson dished out nine in the game while contributing 16 in the scoring column.
The Storm improves to 3-0 in the conference with an overall record of 6-5. They are in action again on Tuesday, January 16 in a boys-girls quad-header against Delhi as a rescheduled game from the winter weather cancelations on January 4 and 5.

Bainbridge-Guilford 45, Unatego 44
OTEGO – The Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats took the momentum from topping Harpursville on Tuesday into their MAC conference road game two night later. The Bobcats fourth quarter pressure led to a comeback win against the Unatego Spartans Thursday night.
Unatego held a 26-15 lead at break and outscored B-G 12-2 in the third, giving themselves the 38-27 lead.
Down by 11 entering into the final eight minutes of play, Bainbridge-Guilford head coach Brad Aldrich knew his team needed to do something different in the quarter to comeback. That’s when he decided to throw a full-court, full-pressure defense at the Spartans.
It proved to work as they caused turnover after turnover, leading to transition baskets for the Bobcats as they went on an 18-6 run to give themselves the win.
Dean Reed finished with a game-high 20 points for Unatego.
The Bobcats’ Tom Palmatier scored a team-high 12 points in the win while teammates Trevor Halaquist finished with 11 points and Xavier Cherniak chipped nine, six coming during the comeback efforts for B-G.
Tuesday’s 81-60 win over the Hornets was the first of the season for Bainbridge-Guilford. The win was a true team effort as the scoring was balanced throughout the game. Halaquist led in the scoring column with 26 points and Cherniak ended the night with 18. Shawn Lindsey scored 15 in the paint while Devin Scherhaufer contributed 10, six from long-range.
Bainbridge-Guilford will look to continue their win streak later tonight when they host Windsor in the non-league contest. Game is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. tip-off.

Poland 65, Otselic Valley 45
OTSELIC – In one of the better games Otselic Valley has played this season, the Vikings kept the game with reach through the first three quarters. But it was in the fourth when OV ran out of gas, allowing Poland to go on 18-9 run over eight minutes and take the 65-45 win Wednesday night.
After one, Otselic Valley led by two. Poland answered in the next quarter, outscoring the Vikings 17-10. Depsite the strong scoring efforts of the visiting team, OV only trailed by five at the break.
28 turnovers for Otselic Valley tallied in the 32 minutes of play, however, the Vikings still had a chance heading into the final quarter of play as they were only down by single digits.
“It was tough to get anything going inside against the bigs of Poland,” said OV’s head coach Jacob Preston. “But this really was one of the better games we have played this year. Just have to put it all together.”
Clayton O’Hara led the Vikings with 12 points and seven rebounds. Devin Stone chipped in 10 points in the loss and Justin Graham passed out four assists in the contest.
Otselic Valley will play at Morrisville State College against Brookfield in what will be a home game on the books for the Vikings.
Girls Basketball
Greene 44, Deposit/Hancock 33
GREENE – The Lady Trojans were rolling on all cylinders versus Deposit/Hancock on Wednesday night, picking up a 44-33 victory.
“We played a great game at both ends,” said Greene head coach Dave Gorton. “We defended very well against a team averaging about 60 points a game.”
Greene held Deposit/Hancock to just three points in the first quarter, and five in the third.
Alyssa Sands led Greene’s scorers with 17 points, followed by Emma Smith, who scored 10 points.
“Emma Smith, Mary Borchardt and McKenna Sergi dominated the boards,” said Gorton. “And Alyssa was great with the ball setting up our offense.”
Harpursville will travel to Greene on Friday to take on the Lady Trojans in their next matchup.
DeRuyter 35, Otselic Valley 30
DERUYTER – Despite solid defensive and rebounding efforts, the Otselic Valley Lady Vikings came up short at DeRuyter on Thursday night, losing 35-30.
“Tonight’s game was a tough one,” said OV head coach Nicholle Lippert. “Otselic put up a bunch of shots but nothing was falling it just wasn’t our night offensively.”
OV’s Amber Meigs led the way for the Lady Vikings, tallying 12 points and seven rebounds. Cassie Agren also pitched in for OV, grabbing 12 rebounds and adding six points, and Maygan Roy had eight rebounds and nine steals in the losing effort.
“Our press was causing a lot of turnovers which led to our 16 steals. The team played hard but we couldn’t buy a basket in the first half and thought our luck would turn around in the second half but it just wasn’t there tonight,” said Lippert.
OV Lady Vikings will travel to Oxford to take on the Blackhawks Tuesday night.
Bowling
Boys and girls sweep B-G in league match
NORWICH – Ed Fuller of Bainbridge-Guilford continued to dominate in the MAC division on Wednesday, bowling a series high 683 that included a match high 236 to lead the Bobcats.
But team effort of the Oxford boys that sealed the sweeping win at home. Dakota Simpson continues to influnce the winning outcome for the Blackhawks as he finished the match with a 593 series.
Newcomer Cole Johnson hit a career high 581 to help Oxford’s winning cause while Ricky Hathaway also assisted with a 540 series.
The Blackhawks finished the match with team total 2,566 pins.
On the girls side, the Lady Blackhawks maintained perfection.
The Oxford girls may have bowled the highest three game series in the history of the MAC division as they rolled all consecutive games over 900, posting a pin total of 2,761.
“The girls are firing on all cylinders heading into the back half of our season,” said the Blackhawks’ head coach Lance Thorne. “It’s impressive and I’ve never seen anything like it in our division. Our assistant coach Frank Ross has done some amazing things with the girls over the past few years.
“The girls are very competitive and very driven to succeed come the end of the season.”
Jourdan Pinney and Erin Howard tied for the match-high 610. Howard recorded the highest score of the day in the girls match with a 243.
Bainbridge-Guilford was led by Audrey Bronson’s 489 series while her teammate Courtney Dilello finished just four pins behind her.
Oxford is in action again later today as they face MAC conference opponent Afton at 3:45 p.m. The Bobcats will also face Afton next but not until Wednesday, January 17.
