Man accused of attempting to murder two troopers extradited back to NY
BINGHAMTON – The man who stands accused of attempting to murder two New York State Troopers with his vehicle in Binghamton on January 2 has been extradited back to New York to face the charges brought against him.
James A. Giacalone, 36, of Glen Aubrey was returned to New York on Saturday following his release from Geisinger Medical Center, where Giacalone was receiving treatment for a gunshot wound on his face that was sustained during the incident.
On January 2, state police attempted to pull over Giacalone, who had a warrant out for his arrest, in the City of Binghamton when Giacalone attempted to escape.
Police say a pursuit led to Giacalone striking one trooper with his vehicle and attempting to strike another as he tried to escape. The trooper that was hit discharged one round from his division-issued sidearm, striking Giacalone in the face.
Giacalone allegedly attempted to strike another trooper as he tried to escape, and was subsequently taken into custody a short distance away on foot.
Both Giacalone and the injured trooper were taken to Wilson Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The injured trooper was treated for leg and facial injuries and was released, and Giacalone was transferred to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa.
Following his extradition Saturday, Giacalone was processed in Binghamton and was arraigned before the Hon. Carol A. Cocchiola in the City of Binghamton Court.
Giacalone was remanded to the Broome County Jail with no bail set. His next court dates are pending.
As part of the investigation, NYSP were assisted by the Pennsylvania State Police, Mahoning Township Police Department, and the security department at Geisinger Medical Center.
