f you have a Greenite that is in the service or has served since 9/11 please call our Cdr so the name can be put on the 9/11 banner that rotates between Bonnies and the Silo. There is no cost to have a name added on the banner. If you have a tattered American Flag and would like to retire it the proper way please put it in the podium we have on the S Canal St entrance to the library.
If you have a veteran/widow/active duty military member(Guard-Reserve-Active) in need of help, please call any of the following: Veterans Crisis Line 1-800-273-8255, Binghamton Vet Center 772-2393, VA Outreach Center 772-9100, County Outreach Officer 778-2147, Southern Tier Veterans Support Group 205-8332, Post Chaplain 656-4533 or other questions 765-6269.
A whole additional list of support services are available in a pamphlet put out by the Red Cross. I have many copies so please call 765-6269. If you may have a veteran that needs to get into the Vets Home please get your paperwork in early. If you are having a tough time getting a vet into the Oxford Vet Home please also tell our area State( note I say State) legislators what you have gone through. This is critical to getting you the care your vet deserves. Things are not the way they used to be with the home. Very frustrating!
Let us never forget we still have many troops in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. We are very much at war but the media downplays it. When it is your family member there or near crazy N Korea the war becomes very real. If you have a loved one on Active Duty chances are they will be in or near the war zones(especially the Marines and Army. If you ever get a chance try and get a copy of the Army, Air Force, Navy, or Marine Times. These are newspapers that cover the various services and are very informative. Past Past Commander Earl Howell often gets copies. Interesting Historical dates mentioned in the Army Times for 2018: 16,899 US troop members killed fighting in 1968 in the Vietnam War -the bloodiest year..Sept 8 will be the 75th anniversary of Italy's surrender in WW 2, March 20 marks the 15th anniversary of the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Veterans Day will be the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice that ended WW 1.
