Lady Trojans dish out 18 assists in senior night win

GREENE – The Lady Trojans recorded 18 assists on 25 made baskets in Monday’s win against Walton. Before the game, head coach Dave Gorton and the Greene underclassmen honored their three seniors – Alyssa Sands, Sophia Brown and Mary Borchardt – for their hard work and dedication through the girls varsity basketball careers.
Emma Smith and Borchardt both posted a double-double in points and rebounds, while Sands scored a game-high 20 points on the special night for the home team.
Sands kicked off her night by scoring eight of the Lady Trojans’ 14 first quarter points on three consecutive trips down the floor.
Greene controlled the tempo of the game, carrying a 10 point lead at intermission. Helping grow the lead in the quarter was Brown, adding five to lead her team into the half time break.
Coming out of halftime, Sands and Emma Smith combined for 16 points of the Trojans’ third quarter points. Borchardt added three in the quarter, scoring her first points before she went on to score her other eight in the final quarter of play, giving her a total of 11 on her senior night.
Borchardt pulled down 11 boards to give her the second half of her double-double. Smith, who also grabbed 11 rebounds, finished with 14 points.
Greene will have a week to prepare for the next two games. The Lady Trojans will be tested on the road against Unatego before hosting Bainbridge-Guilford next Friday, February 2. Unatego, who will host Greene on January 31, is currently in second place in the MAC standings and ahead of the Trojans. Bainbridge-Guilford is one spot behind the Trojans and will be looking to jump up in the standings.
