Sabers’ seven threes pace in win over Purple Tornado

NORWICH – Holly Manchester and Trinasia Kennedy combined for six of Susquehanna Valley’s seven three-point field goals while 6’5 Maeve Donnelly dominated the inside game for the Sabers, topping the host Norwich Tornado 64-30 Thursday night.
The Sabers took a 4-0 lead before Norwich’s Halea Eaton drove down the middle, drawing two defenders. Eaton, knowing she was double teamed, dished the ball to Triniti Myers, who in return finished the at the rim to give her teammate the assist and the first point scored by the Purple Tornado.
Later in the quarter, Eaton did the exact same thing but Norwich was unable to capitalize that trip down the floor.
On the other end, Manchester and Kennedy tallied for four long-range baskets on four consecutive offensive possessions. Manchester gave Susquehanna Valley a 18-2 lead as she connected for the last one. The quarter finished 22-2 in favor of the Sabers.
Eaton knocked down the first basket of the second quarter behind the arc on the left side. Eaton later challenged the height of Sus Valley’s Donnelly on a fast-break and came out with the two points for the Tornado.
Norwich outscored the Sabers in two of the game’s four quarters – 10-8 in the quarter before halftime and 12-8 in the final quarter – but Sus Valley’s 22 point first and 24 point second was the difference for their big conference win.
Eaton led all Purple Tornado scorers with nine points.
For the last eight minutes, Norwich’s bench all but two of their 12. Ashton Wenzel came in later in the fourth and hit both her baskets she attempted. Hailey Colabelli also added four points for Norwich.
Norwich travels to Elmira on Saturday, January 27, for their second of three games in five days. The Purple Tornado are also on the road Monday, January 29 as they head to Windsor.
