Lady Bobcats continue high scoring in 70-34 win; other local sports in the area

BAINBRIDGE – Since falling to Delhi back in December, the Lady Bobcats have won six in a row. In those six wins, Bainbridge-Guilford has scored an average of 72.7 points per game and has out scored their opponents 436-199.
Thursday’s home game against Walton was no different for the Bobcats, winning their seventh straight game with a final of 70-34. over two days after a 70-34 victory over Walton at home on Thursday.
Bainbridge-Guilford registered 19 points in the first three quarters of play while holding the Warriors to less than 10 in the same span. In each of the four stanzas, the Bobcats had a different player pacing the team in the scoring attack.
The hot, long-range shooting hand of Erica Selfridge continued as she hit four from beyond the three-point arc in the opening quarter, accounting for 12 of Bainbridge-Guilford’s 19 points.
With good ball movement, the Lady Bobcats were able to find the open player, who in return knocked down the shot. In the second, B-G’ Maci Leizear led in the scoring charge, finishing with seven in the quarter. The Bobcats held a 38-18 advantage at the intermission.
Jill Cannistra of the Bobcats came out of the halftime break on fire, hitting two three-pointers in the quarter on her way to eight points to lead B-G.
In the fourth, it was Matraca Harmon’s turn. Harmon finish three field goals for six of Bainbridge-Guilford’s 13 points.
All Lady Bobcat players recorded at least two points in Thursday’s game.
Abi Selfridge and Megan Palmatier sprinkled baskets throughout the game, finishing the game 16 and nine points for B-G. Abi Selfridge went 4-for-6 from the free throw line and pulled down nine rebounds, falling one shy of recorded a double-double in the contest.
Erica Selfridge added another bucket in the third, giving her a total of 14 for the game. Cannistra ended her night with 10 and was the third Bobcats to score double-digits.
Walton was led by Olivia Harby’s 12 points, including 4-for-5 shooting from the free throw line.
Bainbridge-Guilford will travel to play Unatego on Saturday for a MAC conference game. Unatego has lost their last two played, one being to MAC leader Delhi by two points. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Otselic Valley 64, Stockbridge Valley 52
MUNNSVILLE – Vikings senior Amber Meigs registered a double-double with 32 points and 11 rebounds while filling out her statline with seven assists and six steals in the Otselic Valley 12-point win over host Stockbridge Valley Thursday night.
Otselic Valley has been on the losing side of some tough, heart-breaking battles with the last four games the Vikings have played in being deciding by five points of less.
OV came out from the start with energy and a strong drive, defeating Stockbridge Valley for the second time this season.
“[Otselic Valley] played a full game of basketball tonight, which is what it takes to win a basketball game against a team that is quite evenly matched with you,” said Vikings head coach Nicholle Lippert.
The Vikings were able to keep the score close in the first half as Stockbridge Valley went into the break up eight.
In the second half, Otselic Valley outscored SV 41-21, putting the Vikings on the winning side of a dominant showing.
“This win took a team effort. The starters set the tone and our girls off the bench kept the tone when they went in. We are looking to keep the intensity and style of play for tomorrow’s game against DeRuyter,” said Lippert.
Other notable performances for the Vikings were Cassie Argen finishing one rebound shy of a double-double, pulling down nine while adding 11 points in the scoring column and Sara Kenyon’s nine points and five boards.
Otselic Valley’s matchup tonight with DeRuyter is part of a boys-girls double-header. The school district will be unveiling and honoring two 1,000 Point Club banners during halftime of the Boys’ Varsity game.
The honorees, Gary Selover and Larry Wood, currently have banners hanging but will receive new ones to reflect their school colors as they recorded their milestone before the merger of Georgetown and South Otselic schools.

Boys Basketball
Sherburne-Earlville 58, Central Valley 44
ILION – With balanced scoring throughout the Marauders roster and a good defensive showing, Sherburne-Earlville took down non-league opponent Central Valley 58-44 for a Thursday road win.
The Marauders opened up the game with five different players recording at least to points for a 16 first quarter.
Hunter Lane’s basket at 5:44 in the second was the first of the quarter for Sherburne-Earlville but the team then had a scoring drought for about four minutes. With 1:25 remaining before the break, Nick Thurston’s field ended the Marauders dry spell. S-E finished the quarter strong with a buzzer-beater by Lane, ending the half leading by eight.
In the second half, Lane scored nine of his 17 for the game as the Marauders scored 33 points.
Dawson Lagoe finished the game with 12 points and Gabe Irwin chipped in with 11, giving Sherburne-Earlville three double-digit scorers for the evening.
S-E’s players off the bench contributed 16 of the 58 team points.
“The guys off the bench really gave us a lot of good minutes tonight,” said Marauders’ head coach Kevin Vibbard. “They played well defensively and played very hard. It was a good team win tonight.”
Sherburne-Earlville hosts the Center State Conference leader Holland Patent on Monday, January 29. The two teams met earlier this season in Holland Patent. The home team took a three point win over the Marauders. Holland Patent is currently undefeated in league play this season. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

In other local sports news, Oxford wrestled Sidney and Unatego/Unadilla Valley on back-to-back days. Oxford lost on Tuesday to UV-U 45-27 and Sidney topped the Blackhawks 51-12 on Wednesday.
The Marauders wrestled to a 54-17 win over Cooperstown on Thursday. All of Sherburne-Earlville’s winning matches were won by pins, seven of them happening in two minutes or less.
In Bowling, Oxford’s girls team lost their first match of the season to Hancock in a final of 3-1. Jourdan Pinney recorded a high game of 192. On the boys side, the Blackhawks lost their match to Hancock 4-0. Dakota Simpson led Oxford with a 505 series.
