Baker catches fire from long-range in Norwich road win; more local sports coverage
WINDSOR – Norwich’s six three-pointers paced the Lady Tornado in Monday night’s 44-29 win over the host Windsor Black Knights.
Windsor outscored Norwich 9-8 in the first quarter but the Purple answered with a 10 point second quarter, heading into half time with a two point lead. Six of their 10 points came from the hot shooting hand on Hannah Baker, knocking down two behind the three-point arc.
Baker hit one in the first quarter and added her fourth after the break, totalling a game-high 12 points.
Sydney Coggins and Triniti Myers each added one from beyond the arc, giving Norwich a total of six for the game.
All seven of Coggins’ points came in the big 16-6 third quarter for the Lady Tornado, the eight minutes of play where Norwich separated themselves from the Black Knights.
In the last quarter, the Purple received balanced scoring as Halea Eaton, Taylor Hansen, Abby Flynn and Hailey Colabelli each added a bucket.
Hansen and Flynn each finished with six points.
Norwich gears up for a back-to-back with Seton Catholic. The Tornado will host the Saints on Wednesday then travel to Seton on Thursday. Wednesday’s game is a 7:45 p.m. start while Thursday’s contest will start at 7:15 p.m.

OXFORD – For the last 4:22 of the ball game, the Lady Blackhawks shut-down Cherry Valley-Springfield’s scoring en route to their three point, 29-26 win over the visiting Patriots.
Oxford’s Allison Beckwith scored with three minutes left in the contest, drawing her team within one point. Teammate Caitlyn Quigley made the go ahead basket with 1:37 remaining.
Jada Albin calmly hit two free throws with 11 seconds left. With the the two teams only separated by one possession, CV-S looked for their chance to score against the home team.
But Oxford’s Ellie Ryan had a big defensive tip, leading to a Karley Miller steal with six seconds left, securing the win for the Blackhawks.
The Patriots took the first quarter 11-7 but it was the only quarter they were able to win. After halftime, CV-S was held to just three free-throws in the third.
Miller and Quigley had eight rebounds each in the win while the Blackhawks received balance scoring throughout. Miller led with seven points while Ellie Ryan and Albin each finished with six points. Quigley added five.
Oxford rebounds from a 44-26 loss on Friday night to the Deposit/Hancock Eagles.
In the first quarter, the Eagles scored 21 points and held the Blackhawks to just five.
Deposit/Hancock’s stand-out Laycee Drake scored a game-high 14 to lead her team to the win while Oxford’s Miller scored 14 as well to pace the Blackhawks in the loss.
Oxford outrebounded the Eagles 35-27 with Miller leading the way, pulling down 13 rebounds in the contest to give her a double-double for the night. Her teammates
Hannah Ryan chipped in five points in Friday’s contest.
Oxford travels to Bainbridge-Guilford on Wednesday before returning home to face Unadilla Valley on Friday, February 2. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m.
Waterville 57, Sherburne-Earlville 42
WATERVILLE – The Lady Marauders jumped out to an early 14-9 lead after one but gave up 22 points in the final eight minutes, allowing the host Waterville Indians to pull away for the 57-42 win Saturday afternoon.
Sherburne-Earlville gave up a total of seven three-points during the contest, three in the second quarter alone. However, the Lady Marauders went into the intermission only down by two.
After the third, Waterville held a four point lead before scoring 22 in the final stanza.
S-E was only able to score 11 in the quarter as they were unable to keep within reach of the home team.
The Marauders’ head coach Jeff Barry contributed the big fourth quarter by the Indians to missed opportunities and turnovers by his team.
“For most of the game, the kids are playing well,” said Barry. “We are hoping to get a few more wins in our remaining games to make sectionals.”
Tessa Cole paced the Marauders with team-high 16 points while Kaitlyn Furner finished with 11.
Sherburne-Earlville hosts Holland Patent later tonight, where they will be looking to avenge the earlier season loss to the Golden Knights. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

AFTON – Julia Oglesby scored 19 points to lead Unadilla Valley to a road win over the host Afton Crimson Knights Friday.
The Storm took a 13 point lead after one quarter, outscoring the Crimson Knights 20-7.
But Afton fought back, going on an 11-6 run in the second quarter, cutting the Storm lead to eight by the half time break.
In the second half, it was all UV the Storm totaled 29 points over the 16 minutes while holding the host Afton to just 15.
Casey East scored double figures with 10, leading the way for her team while Shelby Meade and Meegan White each chipped in eight for the Storm.

CONKLIN – Norwich’s 17-3 second quarter proved to be the difference in the 55-40 road win over the Susquehanna Valley Sabers Friday. Going into this game, the Purple had lost three straight when traveling. Looking to the reverse that visiting team curse, Norwich came out and score 17 in each of the first two quarters of play.
After the first eight minutes, Susquehanna Valley had hung in there trailing by just three points. But Norwich turned on their pressuring defense. In return, the Tornado limited the Sabers to three second quarter points, allowing Norwich to go into the halftime break ahead by 17.
“Our pressuring defense carried us to victory,” said Norwich’s assistant coach Tom Collier. “We need the same effort Tuesday.”
The Purple Tornado cruised from the there. Helping contribute to the Norwich win was their ability to outrebound the host team by 10 rebounds on the defensive end, limiting the Sabers to one-and-done chances.
Also aiding in the win was the Purple’s skill to share the ball. As a team, Norwich recording 17 assists.
Leading the way was Norwich’s youngster Carson Maynard. Maynard finished with a game-high 20 points, a personal best he has met twice this season, while dishing out seven assists.
J.T. Vinal and Marcus Benjamin added eight points each in the win.

Andrew Jackson led the Storm with 19 points while teammates Levi Rifanburg scored 15 and Caleb Parker finished with 11.
Both Rifanburg and Parker went three-for-four from the foul-line in the contest as the team shot 18-for-22 from the line.
