Despite loss, injury and illness doesn’t slow down the Norwich swimmers

NORWICH – The Purple Tornado participated in their last dual meet for this season with Holland Patent on Tuesday. Plagued by injury and illness, Norwich swam with only six swimmers for the meet.
With many of the Purple Tornado swimmers having to race in back-to-back events, Norwich handled the challenge very well.
Looking for times for sectional seeds, the Purple had four personal best times during the meet and some swimmers were within a few tenths.
In the 50-yard Freestyle, first place winner Griffin Frank recorded his personal best in the event, swimming to a time of 25.48. In the same event, Zac Marsh also swam as personal best time of 29.92.
Marsh recorded another personal best time of 1:13.61 in the 100-yard Freestyle finishing sixth in the race. Taking second in the event was Ayden Hagar with a time of 1:02.77, his personal best time in the event.
Norwich had a great day with the relay events, placing first in two of three and finishing second in the other.
The 200-yard Medley relay went to the Norwich team of Aidan Sullivan, Hagar, Frank and Cameron Pittsley, finishing with a time of 2:07.32
In the last event of the night, the swimming foursome of Frank, Sullivan, Marsh and Jack Sherry took a time of 4:43.16 in the 400-yard Freestyle relay, taking first for the Purple Tornado.
Other notable first place finishes for the Tornado were in the 100-yard Backstroke as Frank swam to a time of 1:07.44 in the event. And Hagar captured first in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:25.35.
“The team got hit with the flu or stomach virus last week and still into this week,” said Norwich head coach Kevin Diefenbacher. “If we had all of 10 members of the team, I think it would have been a real close meet.”
Norwich will have the rest of the week filled with strong workouts before starting to taper their practices for sectionals on Wednesday, February 14 at Owego. Swimming will start at 4:30 p.m.
