Norwich takes home the Section IV Class C title after 8 make finals; BGAH finishes second with three crowned champs

WHITNEY POINT – The Purple Tornado wrestling team finished with a final score of 238 on Saturday, February 3 to take home first place honors at the Section IV Class C Tournament. The Bear of BGAH followed in second place with four in the finals and seven wrestlers placing in the top six.
The Bears’ Ben Bivar, Shane Hoover, and Mike Wilmot all took home championship titles while Dylan Decker fell just short placing second.
Norwich had Dante Geislinger, Nick Glanville, Mike Squires, Ty Rifanburg and Brennan Slater all win in the finals while Andrew Brown, Eli Rodriguez and Tyler Rice made finals appearances but were beat in the match to finish in second.
Geislinger and Brown faced each other in the 99 pound finals with Geislinger taking the match with a 9-0 major decision. Both should receive high seeds in this weekend’s Division-II championship.
Decker was pinned in the first period of his finals match by Owego’s Jacob Morris. Decker reached the finals match with two pins of his own in the earlier rounds.
Glanville topped the tournament host Whitney’s Points Aiden Rosa with a first period pin at the 1:29 mark of the match for the 113 pound final.
Squires took a 11-0 major decision win in the finals over Samuel Dow of Dryden. Squires pinned his two opponents in the quarterfinals and semis after receiving an opening round bye.
Also reaching the finals by way of two pins was Norwich’s Rodriguez. Rodriguez faced Lansing’s Daniel Koll, the sections top wrestler in the 132 pound weight class in what was the match of the finals. The match went the full six minutes with Koll coming out the winner by way of a close 3-0 decision. Rodriguez, currently ranked number two in the 132 weight class for Section IV will also receive a higher seed after the season he has had.
The Section’s top wrestler at 138 pound is BGAH’s Ben Bivar. Bivar took home the 138 pound title Saturday with a 1:56 pin over Whitney Point’s YaMeek Kendrick. Bivar had just one loss on the season and 21 of his 29 match wins have been by pins.
Shane Hoover of BGAH was the next county wrestler to wrestle in the finals. Hoover took home the tournament crown in the 152 pound weight class with a 7-1 decision over Windsor’s Gabe Monroe.
The Bears’ also had Mike Wilmot in the 160 final. Wilmot also took home first, edging out Dryden’s Cody Senecal with a close 3-2 decision. Wilmot reached the finals with two first period pins in the quarterfinals and semis.
Norwich’s Rifanburg brought home the tournament title in the 170 pound weight class after a 15-0 tech fall over Susquehanna Valley’s Chris Harold. In the STAC Tournament, these two wrestlers faced each other with Rifanburg also taking the match win by a 1:57 pin.
Slater was on the mat in the next match of the evening finals in the 182 pound match. He met Mitchell Knapp of the Sabers as well. These two have met twice this season and Slater has been the winner of both by way over pin each time. Saturday’s final was no different as Slater pinned Knapp right at the end of the first period.
At 220 pounds, Chenango County’s last wrestler in the finals was Tyler Rice. Race faced Dylan Dunham of the host Whitney Point Eagles. The match ended up going into the second period before Rice was pinned by Dunham at the 2:43 mark. Rice has had some big wins this season and will likely receive a high seed in the Championships this weekend as well.
Other Norwich wrestlers that will be participating in the Division-II Championships this weekend will be Keegan Wright, Dakota Powers, Angel Francis and Dakota Hall. All placed in the top eight to qualify for the sectionals championship, giving the Purple 12 out of 14 wrestles to participated in this past Saturday’s class tournament.
The Bears will also be sending Haiden Burns, Dalton Griffith, Brady Buttice, Damien Knapp, Hayden Lewis, Jacob Terpstra and Brock Weist. All of these BGAH wrestlers placed in the top six at the class tournament for podium finishes and the 179 team points collected by the Bears to land the second place finish.
Friday will start the action on the mat at Watkins Glen High School at 5:15 p.m. for prelim and quarterfinal matches. The wrestling will continue with round one of wrestlebacks starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday and continue through the day with finals estimated to start at 4:30 p.m. All times are subject to change throughout the day without any notice.
