NORWICH – In their last regular season home game, Norwich took a 20-2 the first quarter and ran away with the win over Chenango Forks on Monday.
Forks scored the first four points of the game before Norwich allowed just one more basket in the first for the visiting team.
Halea Eaton kicked off the 20 point Purple Tornado run with a good, strong finish at the rim. On the next possession, Taylor Hansen drove to the basket to draw multiple defenders before dumping it off to Abby Flynn for the score.
Eaton finished the run leading the team with seven points while Flynn and Hansen each added four.
In the second quarter, Hannah Baker came off the bench to pour in eight points, six coming from behind the three-point line as she is pretty well known for. Teammate Triniti Myers controlled the inside game in the eight minute span as she finished three field goals and an and-one opportunity.
The rest of Norwich’s 28 points came from a very balanced offensive attack with Sydney Coggings and Emerson Burton scoring their first baskets of the game.
The Purple Tornado got off to a slow start in the third but rebounded nicely in the fourth to score 12 points as team. In the third, Hailey Colabelli jumped into the scoring column by knocking down a 15-footer. She added another in the fourth. Ashton Wenzel scored in the fourth on a put-back finish.
Myers and Eaton tied for game-high scoring honors as each contributed 13 in the win. Flynn finished 10 while Baker ended with eight, and Hansen and Saige Benedict each added six.
Forks was led by Katie Flynn’s 22 points, 10 coming in the third quarter.
Norwich travels to Oneonta on Thursday for their last divisional game of the season. The Purple has added Binghamton on Saturday and Johnson City on Monday for additional games before the Section IV seed meeting. Both games will add points for Norwich’s season tally and with wins for the rest of the season, the Tornado could be looking at three-seed for sectionals
On the boys side, Norwich traveled to Chenango Forks on Tuesday night for a game that turned out to be a defensive battle that the Tornado came out on top, 48-43.
In a game where each basket seemed to be answered on the other end of the floor, Norwich’s fourth quarter free-throw shooting help push them to the victory.
The Purple shot 7-for-13 during the final eight minutes of play, accounting for nearly half of their 18 points. In the quarter, Michael Carson scored four from the floor and Carson Maynard went 4-for-7 at the line.
Maynard, as said by assistant coach of the Tornado Tom Collier, controlled the game for Norwich, allowing them to get win on the road.
Marcus Benjamin pulled down 12 rebounds while J.T. Vinal was all over the court, recorded 4 steals and 4 deflections, aiding in the big defensive effort by Norwich.
Maynard led the scoring for Norwich with 15 while Carson added 10.
The Purple are home on Friday against Oneonta. Before the game that is scheduled to start at 7:45 p.m., Norwich will be honoring their seniors.
