Marauders’ win Tuesday night secures spot in sectionals; More local basketball action
SHERBURNE – The Lady Marauders won their fourth league game on Tuesday night with a final of 54-22 over Clinton, reaching a requirement to qualify for sectional play after the regular season.
Over the first 16 minutes of play, Sherburne-Earlville dominated the scoring column with a 30-5 lead. In the third, the Marauders showed no signs of letting up as they tacked on another 16-6.
Nearly having every girl on the roster score, Sherburne-Earlville added another eight points in the fourth – two coming from senior Eva Westbrook at the free-throw line.
S-E’s second senior, Sophia Khoury got her first points on the board in the first half with two made foul shots as well. Khoury finished with four, going 100-percent from the line. The team as whole shot a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw for the game.
Tessa Cole ended the game with a game-high 19 points while teammate Kaitlyn Furner finished in double-digits as well with 12. Nine of Furner’s 12 came in the first half.
The Marauders travel to Unatego on Thursday for a non-league game and follow up with another road trip to Adirondack on Tuesday, February 13.

BAINBRIDGE – Balanced team scoring and sharing the ball for 20 assists as team propelled the Lady Bobcats to a 73-5 win over the visiting Lady Warriors of Sidney in a MAC league game Tuesday night.
Megan Palmatier led the Bainbridge-Guilford in the assist column as she dished out seven passes on scoring plays. Jill Cannistra kicked another six assists while Abi Selfidge handed out four.
Kori Thornton led B-G in scoring with 17 points for while Macie Leizear tallied 14 points, including four from behind the three-point arc.
Abi Selfridge scored 11 while pulling down 15 boards, 11 on the offensive end. Erica finished the contest with 13 points Jillian Cannistra had six points with six assists.
Sidney’s Mackenzie Constable scored three points and Hannah Gray scored two.
Bainbridge-Guilford is the two seed the in MAC Conference currently and will host Greene on Monday, February 12 at 7:15 p.m. Other games for the MAC playoffs and times will be announced later this week once the information is received.

Afton 59, Oxford 55 (OT)
AFTON – Afton’s Madison Riley stole the ball eight times the down the stretch, scoring six of her eight points in the fourth quarter to lead the Crimson Knights to overtime against the visiting Oxford Blackhawks. In the extra session of basketball, Afton outscored the Blackhawks 11-7 for a 59-55 victory.
A close game throughout, the Crimson Knights trailed by one at the half. Oxford extended their lead after three to six after completing a 10-5 to end the quarter.
But Afton answered in the fourth behind the Riley’s steals and six points. Teammate Sam Schoelier hit two free-throws in the closing 20 seconds of the quarter to tie the game and force the extra time.
In overtime, the Crimson Knights hit nine of their 14 attempts foul shots to earn the win.
Schoelier finished with nine points and 13 rebounds for Afton. Teammates Casey East led the team with 13 points while Abby Beaulieu scored 10 points, seven coming from the free-throw line.
Oxford was led by Caitlyn Quigley’s 14 points. Ellie Ryan added 10 while Allison Beckwith and Karley Miller each scored nine in the tough loss for the Blackhawks.
Afton and/or Oxford will play in mini MAC games for the first round either later this week or Monday.

Otselic Valley 45, McGraw 34
OTSELIC – Before Monday’s contest with McGraw, the Vikings recognized their three seniors – Lacy Wood, Sara Kenyon and Amber Meigs. Otselic Valley went on to win the game 45-34 over league opponent McGraw, claiming their seventh win of the year. Of those seven, six are league wins.
On top of it being senior night, Otselic Valley achieved their team goal as Victoria Reichard scored her first varsity giving everyone on their team at least one scored basket during a game this season.
“When [Victoria] scored, you would have thought that the entire team scored that same basket,” said Vikings head coach Nicholle Lippert. “It is great to see the girls excited for each other.”
The Lady Vikings jumped out to a 25-9 lead after the first quarter. That score remained the same into the halftime intermission as neither team scored in the second.
McGraw played hard to answer in the fourth, giving the OV team and crowd a scare scoring 21 points.
Meigs led the way again Monday night, scoring 18 while stealing the ball eight times and pulling down eight boards. Cassie Agren chipped in 12 as she grabbed seven rebounds for Otselic Valley
The same to teams are scheduled in a week but first, OV will travel to Fabius-Pompey Thursday with the game scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.

SHERBURNE – In attempt to shut down Clinton’s Matthew Hobika – who had scored 36 and 42 points in the visiting team’s last two games – Sherburne-Earlville played a box-and-one defense.
The scheme worked for the first 16 minutes but in the third quarter, Clinton started to pick apart the defense by the Marauders, scoring 17 in the third on their way to an eight point win over the home team.
Clinton held a slight four point advantage at the intermission. In the third, they went on a 17-8 run, forcing Sherburne-Earlville to put together a comeback effort for the last eight minutes.
And S-E answered the call going a big run. At one point the Marauders cut the lead down to four but it was the closest they were able to come.
As Sherburne-Earlville was trying to stop the clock in the end by fouling, Clinton made free-throws, giving the visiting team an eight point win in the end.
The Marauders were led by Dawson Lagoe’s 15 points with Hunter Lane adding 14 in the loss.
Before the game, the Marauders honored their nine seniors.
Sherburne-Earlville has two games remaining in their regular season schedule but has already secured their spot in sectionals. The Marauders will travel to Tully on Friday, February 9 at 7 p.m.
