NEW BERLIN – The second half adjustments made by Unadilla Valley head coach Brandi Whitbeck proved to be a huge game changer as the Storm erased a slow start 10 point lead held by the Greene Trojans to win in overtime 56-53 in Tuesday’s MAC league girls basketball contest.
Shooting 11-for-15 (73.3-percent) at the free-throw line, Greene went into the halftime break up 10 which is a position they had been in many time before.
“We switched defense in the second half and that made a big difference,” said Whitbeck.
And it showed as UV came out of the locker room and went on a 17-11 run in the third with seven of their team points coming at the free-throw line.
Still holding a three point lead into the fourth, the Lady Trojans scored nine of their 11 point from behind the three-point arc.
But the Storm continued with their defense that seemed to disrupt the Greene offense while keeping their offensive pace from the third quarter. UV’s Julia Oglesby scored eight in the final quarter, including the game-tying basket to force the extra basketball session.
In overtime, the contest came down to free-throws. Greene’s Alyssa Sands took all eight shots in the extra four minutes of play while the Storm shot 14 times, making 10 allowing Unadilla Valley to take their first lead of the game and hold on to it until the buzzer sounded to signal the end of the game.
“This was a tremendous win for us,” said Whitbeck. “Some of our role players really stepped up offensively tonight.”
UV’s Kyleigh George finished with a game-high 17 points, shooting 7-for-8 at the foul line. Her teammate Meegan White also had a great night scoring as eight of her 10 came at the free-throw line.
As a team, the Storm shot 22-for-33 for the contest. Greene took 26 attempts at the line, making 17 to shoot 65.4-percent.
Greene was led by Sands as she scored 19 for the night, 13 points coming from made free-throws. Sands shot 20 attempts for the game.
The Trojans also had Sophia Brown and McKenna Sergi finish in double-digits. Brown tallied 13 with 12 of her points coming from beyond the arc. Sergi knocked down two from long-range for four of her 11 points in the contest.
Unadilla Valley also had Julia Oglesby record a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 14 rebounds as well as Shelby Meade who put up 10 points and pulled down 13 boards.
Both Unadilla Valley and Greene are now getting ready for the MAC postseason tournament, which starts next week. Games and times will be announced as soon as they are finalized.
