NORWICH – In an effort to foster an increasingly inclusive and stimulating educational environment for all, Norwich High School staff and students took part in the national Start With Hello Week from February 5 to 9.
Start With Hello Week is an initiative of Sandy Hook Promise's: an organization founded and led by family members of loved ones who were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary on December 14, 2012 which strives to prevent gun-related deaths with youths by focusing on chronic social isolation.
"The purpose of this national campaign is to combat social isolation, build connectivity, and cultivate positive relationships," said NHS Principal Kisten Giglio. "Teachers and students are encouraged to be mindful of students they see alone, reach out and help, and that they can begin with saying hello."
Giglio said that according to author and educator John Hattie, the top two influences related to learning and achievement in schools are teachers' estimates of student achievement and collective teacher efficacy––both of which depend on building relationships with students.
Start With Hello Week culminated with "No One Eats Alone Day" on Friday, where students and teachers were encouraged to ensure none of their classmates had to eat lunch alone.
"By developing proactive relationships between teachers and students, as well as between students themselves, we can have a powerful impact on student achievement," said Giglio.
Giglio said one way the high school will try to advance this initiative between now and June is through a mentoring program the school has implemented by its senior class members.
