SPCA discusses no-kill efforts on the eve of major fundraiser
NORWICH – The Chenango County SPCA (CSPCA) says it’s proud to be a no-kill shelter, and thanks the community for its support.
CPSCA Executive Director, Annette J. Clarke spoke on Tuesday about how a no-kill shelter process works, and what prompted the CSPCA’s transformation years ago.
“Being a no-kill shelter means we don’t euthanize animals to make space or save money," said Clarke. "In the last 5 years, we’ve managed to reduce euthanizations by 86 percent, and we did that by only considering euthanasia an option in extreme medical or temperamental circumstances."
According to Clarke, the transformation began over five years ago when she began at the CSPCA, and the shelter recognized it wanted to change policies.
That's when the shelter began moving towards a no-kill goal.
To meet the SPCA's guidelines on being a 'no-kill' shelter, the CSPCA must ensure "no animal is ever euthanized except in cases of extreme aggression, terminal illness or the inability to maintain a reasonable quality of life in a shelter environment," read the SPCA's posted policy online.
To do this, Chenango SPCA networked with other animal shelters with larger capacities, reduced adoption fees, and met with local veterinarians to improve healthcare quality.
Clarke said the changes were positive, but came with some extra expenses.
“Now we need to raise $350,000 a year, and we’ve been fortunate to have such a supporting community, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.”
The CSPCA is hosting its 14th annual Fur Ball event on Saturday, February 24 which will begin at 7 p.m., and will be held at 24 Rexford Street, Norwich NY, in the Northeast Classic Car Museum.
This years theme is Denim and Diamonds, and will feature dancing, live entertainment by the Beadle Brothers, along with cuisine and desserts provided by Tuller's catering and Kelly Banks Cakes.
Tickets can be pre-purchased until Friday on the CSPCA’s website at https://chenangospca.org/events/ or by calling the CSPCA at (607) 316-9144.
The CSPCA will also be accepting ticket purchases at the door, the night of the event.
