Norwich Indoor Track and Field finishes season strong at New York State Championship Meet
STATEN ISLAND – While the Tornado Indoor Track and Field members may not have come home with a state title, the group of six athletes from Norwich finished on strong note with more school records being broken while competing at the State Championship meet at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Saturday, March 3.
After breaking Norwich’s Indoor 4x200 record at the Section IV Championship meet, David Berger, Eric Conant, Nik Barber and Gabe Gawronski have continued to lower the time each meet after. At the State Qualifying meet, the team finished with a time of 1:35.69.
The group again finished with a strong time and took .36 seconds off, giving the season a final time and new school record of 1:35.33. That time was good enough for 16th place out of 21 teams. Of their heat, Berger, Conant, Barber and Gawronski finished third of the six teams.
The group of four has no seniors on the team and should end up right back at the state meet next year.
Conant and Gawronski also ran in an individual race during the championships.
Conant, the speedster he is, finished with a time of 6.67 in the 55-meter dash. His time was good enough for a 16th place finish also. With 32 racers competing in the event, Conant split the group in half with his race time.
While he did not qualify for the finals, Conant set the new record in the 55-meter dash. Again, only being a junior, Conant is expected to break the record again next year and will end up back at the NYSPHSAA Championship meet for his senior year.
Gawronski raced well in the 600-meter run as he raced to a personal best time of 1:24.30. Just one week early, Gawronski finished first at the Section IV State Qualifying meet with a time of 1:25.21. Nearly topping that time by a full second, Gawronski finished 19th out of the 30 racer field.
For the Norwich girls, Caroline Stewart represented in the long jump field event. Stewart jumped well in the event, jumping 15-feet on her first jump. From their, she increased her distance by more than half a foot each jump after.
On her second attempt, Stewart landed in the pit at 15-feet-6.75-inches. Sitting in the 25th position of the 31 competitor field and one jump left, Stewart knew she needed a big launch to record a long distance. Stewart soared through the air and landed at 16-feet-3.75-inches, moving her up six places for a final spot at 16th.
Emily Shattuck attended the meet at an alternate for the intersection relay team but unfortunately, did not run for the group.
The six track and field stars for Norwich will join their teammates in preparing for the Spring outdoor season. Their first practice was yesterday and their first meet is scheduled for April 11 where they will travel to face the Black Knights of Windsor.
