BINGHAMTON – A dream is becoming a reality for unseeded Frankie Garcia of the Binghamton Bearcats. This Thursday, March 15, Garcia makes his first appearance at the NCAA Division-I wrestling championships.

Garcia, a former two-time New York State Champion as a member of the Norwich Purple Tornado, knew he was packing his bags for Cleveland, Ohio after he won his semifinal match with a 7-5 decision at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships two weeks ago.

During the EIWA Championships, Garcia knocked off three nationally ranked wrestlers to place second.

“I am nothing but ecstatic to be going to the NCAA tournament,” said Garcia. “This has been one of the biggest dreams of mine since I could last remember and to make this dream a reality is a feeling that is indescribable.

“Going into a prestigious tournament like this comes with so many thoughts, emotions and even fear at times but from everything I learned from this sport, I am able to know that all I can do is control the controllable and for me that is setting my focus one match a time, starting with my first round match on Thursday.”

Garcia, currently ranked 22nd in the country by TrackWrestling, will face the No. 7 seed, Ryan Deakin of Northwestern in the first round.

Deakin, a redshirt freshman for the Wildcats, currently holds an overall record of 30-5 and carries a 8-1 record against Big Ten Conference opponents.

At the Big Ten Conference Championships, Deakin placed sixth. He has 10 major decision wins this season along with three technical falls and nine wins by way of pin.

Currently, Garcia’s season record is 27-11.

“I believe when it is time to step on the mat to wrestle Thursday, I can pull out a win over my opponent and I can pull off another upset,” said Garcia.

The two are set on the bottom half of their 149 pound weight class, a class with 32 wrestlers in the field. Many of the wrestlers that Garcia faced just two weeks ago, a few that he pulled off big upsets against, are also in the field. Garcia could see one or two again this weekend.

“I am going in unseeded into this tournament and I wouldn’t want to have it any other way. I have always thrives as an underdog, that’s just who I am,” said Garcia.

The championship tournament will be held at Quicken Loans Arena, March 15-17. Matches are scheduled to be shown on ESPN or ESPNU, depending on the session. All times and networks are subject to change.
