DEC reminds residents of burn ban beginning Friday

NEW YORK STATE – In an effort to curtail any spring wildfires once the snow melts, the Department of Environmental Conservation issued a reminder to New Yorkers Wednesday that residential brush burning is banned from March 16 to May 14.

DEC Commissioner Basic Seggos said, “While many people associate wildfires with the western United States, the start of spring weather and the potential for dry conditions increases the risk for wildfires in New York.”

The number one cause of spring wildfires in the state is the open burning of debris, according to the DEC.

“New York prohibits residential burning during the high-risk fire season to reduce wildfires and protect people, property, and natural resources,” said Seggos. “The ban has been extremely effective in reducing the number of wildfires, and we’re encouraging New Yorkers to put safety first.”

Those who violate the burn ban from March 16 to May 14 will be fined a minimum of $500 for a first offense, and will also be subject to criminal enforcement actions.

Since the DEC implemented strict restrictions against open burning in 2009 – regulations that “allow residential brush fires in towns with fewer than 20,000 residents during most of the year, but prohibit such burning in spring when most wildfires occur,” – the average number of spring wildfires in the state decreased by 36.7 percent, according to the DEC.

The DEC noted that campfires using charcoal or untreated are still permitted during the burn ban, but burning leaves or garbage is prohibited.

To report a violation of the burn ban, call 1-800-TIPP DEC (1-800-847-7332), or report online at www.dec.ny.gov/regulations/67751.html.
