'Chenango County in the Great War' now on display

NORWICH – A new exhibit entitled ‘Chenango County in the Great War’ is now on display at the Chenango County Historical Society in observance of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

The exhibit highlights the contributions of Chenango County soldiers, Lt. Warren E. Eaton, DSC, Gilbert S. Gibson, Floyd O. Etheridge, and Barrett V. Northrup, and also includes displays that illustrate the role of women in the war. Several firsthand artifacts and documents are also featured throughout the exhibit, which is open through the day before Veteran’s Day on November 10.

Lt. Warren E. Eaton, DSC was a fighter pilot in the first world war with at least one confirmed kill. Lt. Eaton was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC)––the second highest military award that can be given to a member of the U.S. Army for his extreme gallantry and risk of life in combat.

Today, Lt. Eaton’s name is well-known locally as the Lt. Warren E. Eaton airport and American Legion Post 189 in Norwich are both named in his honor. The exhibit features the Distinguished Service Cross medallion that Lt. Eaton was awarded.

Also featured in the display is a salute to the American Legion, which is also gearing up to celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding in 2019. Other items on display include uniforms worn by U.S. Army members, U.S. Navy members, American Legion members, and musicians.

The exhibit was made possible by its sponsors, American Legion, Lt. Warren E. Eaton, DSC, Post 189 and Ms. Elise B. Eaton. The exhibit was created by committee members Ed Erickson, Vicky House, Charlene LaFever, Kali Murphy, William Searfoss, and Sara Evenson.
