Physical week three of YMCA Women’s league leaves one remaining undefeated team

NORWICH – An exciting series of scrappy games were played in the third week of the YMCA women’s corporate league basketball season. On Monday, the six locally sponsored teams took to the court.
In the first game of the night, the Nina’s team took on the J. Stone Barnes team in an aggressive match-up. J. Stone Barnes jumped to the lead early with a 29-11 edge over Nina’s at the half.
Tanya Barnes’ 19 first half points gave the team a large lead, with a majority of Barnes’ points coming from fast-break opportunities.
Holding their advantage, J. Stone Barnes walked away from the battle with a 57-38 win over Nina’s.
Barnes tallied 4-for-6 from the free-throw line as she finished with a game-high 27. Barnes’ teammate Hannah Johnson added an additional 16 points for the team.
Team Nina’s was led by Megan Golden with a team-high 19 points. 15 coming from Golden’s unstoppable three-point shooting. Golden is followed by Meagan Schulz who scored 10 points for the team.
The second game of the night was evenly matched between team Upstate Companies and Team Corbin, despite Upstate Companies only having five players available.
Team Corbin had balanced scoring by all players at the intermission while team Upstate Companies was led by Jen Patten with 13 points. Even scoring allowed Team Corbin to top team Upstate 24-19 at the half buzzer.
In a physical contest, 17 team fouls were handed over to team Upstate Companies from Team Corbin, 10 given away in the first half.
Despite foul trouble early on, Team Corbin walked away with a 39-27 win over team Upstate Companies. Leading in the scoring for Team Corbin was Gabby Testani, tallying a game-high nine points. Six points were netted by both Leah Dumond and Katie Krolikowski.
Team Upstate Companies member Jen Patten gave her team 16 points in the loss and her teammate Cara Bradley finished with five.
In the final game of the night between The Stadium and team Southern Tier Pet Nutrition (STPN), The Stadium grabbed a 33-21 win.
A score of 18-9 at the half gave The Stadium an edge on the game. Kristen Newton tossed in eight points at the half followed not far behind by teammate Rebecca Walling with seven.
Walling’s three-point shooting gave her the game-high honors with 20 points. Three of her three-pointers fell in the second half to keep the edge over STPN.
A team-high eight points from STPN were given by Ellie Powers, who also walked away clean of fouls. Teammate Kim Akshar had three fouls and added five points to the team’s loss.
Week four will kick back up on April 2 as the six teams take a week off for spring break.
