GMU Drama Club to present
GILBERTSVILLE – This April 5 and 7, the Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton Central School Drama Club is taking the stage with their production of the classic Broadway comedy, Arsenic and Old Lace. Written in 1941 by Joseph Kesserling, it tells the story of two kindly old sisters and their three nephews.
Returning home to visit his aunts, nephew Mortimer soon discovers insanity seems to run in the family. He sees it in his brother Teddy, who has always believed he is Teddy Roosevelt, and he prefers not to talk about his brother Jonathan, who was “the kind of boy who liked to cut worms in two — with his teeth.”
It is soon brought to light that Mortimer’s beloved aunts Abby and Martha have been taking boarders into their home and poisoning them. Of course, it was all with the best intentions. The gentlemen were just so sad and lonely, and they looked so peaceful after they had passed. Now Mortimer must do everything he can to keep their secret. Especially since Jonathan is back in town with Dr. Einstein, a… plastic surgeon?
Playing the parts of Abby and Martha are Meredith Hammond and Hunter Christian. The nephews will be played by Lucas Piedmonte (Mortimer), Timothy Picozzi (Teddy), and Michael O’Connor (Jonathan). Dr. Einstein will be played by Vasiliki Drapaniotis. Filling out the rest of the cast of characters are the friendly police officers Brophy and Klein (Rachel Lyons and Natalie Pistor), the chief of police, Lieutenant Rooney (Nina D’Amato), Mortimer’s fiancée Elaine (Karli Hinman), her father Reverend Harper (Mickenson Clune), the superintendent of the Happy Dale Sanitarium Mrs. Witherspoon (Maya Farwell), and the gentlemen Mr. Gibbs, Mr. Spenalzo, and Mr. Hoskins (Anika L. Christensen, Téo Sauvageon, and Emily Hammond).
Behind the curtain, Emily Hammond will also be the stage manager. Technical crew will be made up of Tyler Lindsley, Noah Pain, Kendra Hammond, and Juston Spathelf. Directed by Gerrit Bakhuizen and Mark Piedmonte, this hilarious comedy will make the audience die laughing!
Showings will be on Thursday, April 5 and Saturday, April 7 at 7 p.m. in the Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton school auditorium (no show on Friday). Admission is five dollars. The GMUCS Board of Education is also sponsoring a dinner before the Saturday performance at six p.m. Included in the dinner tickets are show tickets and reserved seating. All profits benefit the GMUCS Board of Education scholarship fund.
