UV's $12 million building project moves forward
NEW BERLIN – After a Unadilla Valley School District Board of Education discussion about building renovations, the school's superintendent explained the process, and discussed what kinds of improvements the school would make in the future.
Unadilla Valley Central School District began phase one of its multi-phase project on June 24, 2016, and now it has come close to completing phase two, which has focused on building maintenance.
"We want to keep the school buildings up to date and as cost efficient as possible," said Unadilla Valley Superintendent Robert Mackey.
Mackey explained that the school has prioritized feedback from teachers and students throughout the process, but also taken into consideration the financial concerns of the community.
"We're trying to spread the renovation process between several smaller projects for the entire school to properly manage costs," he said.
"We want to make sure that we can do these projects without affecting the tax payers, and thus far there have been no proposed impacts on local tax levy based on project cost."
Mackey said the school is able to finance its renovation projects by state aid, but the process can be arduous due to state specifications and requirements.
Regardless, he added that the recent renovations are just the beginning, and that school will continue to make improvements on infrastructure, aesthetics, and the learning process in the future.
"It can't just be a physical aesthetic change, it has to include a learning change as well," he said, "The learning space has to be coupled with instructional process changes to truly create innovative learning environments."
Mackey said that it would be up to the schools superintendent and board of education members to decide what kind of renovations will occur in its five or ten year building plans.
