Annual Dollars for Scholars 5k run and walk prepares for sixth year

NORWICH – Believe it or not, spring is around the corner and the 5K run season along with it. The first of the local 5K fundraiser race is the Annual Dollars for Scholars 5K run and walk, sponsored by NBT Bank.
This 5K run or walk will be held on Sunday, April 15. The Dollars for Scholars committee changed the day of the race from Saturday to Sunday in hopes that they will be able to attract runners from local track teams.
The race will begin at 9 a.m. at the Norwich High School track. Starting at the track, the race goes around the high school and down Midland Drive, where it continues onto Hale Street, East River Road, and then onto East Main Street before returning to the starting spot.
Participants may start arriving at the track at 8 a.m. to pick up their race packets and/or to register but must be checked in by 8:45 a.m.
The student chapter of Norwich Dollars for Scholars helps organize the event, which is not only a great help, but also a valuable learning experience for those involved.
The students help by collecting the raffle prizes for the event from local area businesses. Registered racers will be given 5 tickets to enter in the raffle, and anyone may purchase additional raffle tickets for $1 each.
Currently, the group has a delicious platter of homemade chocolate treats from Lauren Howell, three pairs of admission tickets to the Northeast Classic Car Museum, handmade soaps and chapsticks from BBS Made from Scratch, and a sport lightweight running belt, in addition to other items from which to choose. The committee thanks all of the community merchants who donated to this event.
They also extend thanks to the following event sponsors: NBT Bank (our naming sponsor), Blueox Energy Products and Services, the Canasawacta Country Club, The Chazen Companies, Laral Management, NYCM Insurance Co., and Preferred Mutual Insurance Co. Most of the event expenses have been covered thanks to these businesses. With the sponsorships provided, almost all of the proceeds raised through registration to go directly toward college scholarships for Norwich High School students.
Event co-organizer, and President of Norwich Dollars for Scholars, Rachel Flanagan, said, “It’s hard to believe we are already going on our sixth year for the Dollars for Scholars 5k.
“We are incredibly grateful for our sponsors and our participants for making it possible to succeed. I think we are all looking forward to the snow melting so we can get out there, have a great time, and raise money for our local students while we are at it.”
The race registration is $15 for students and $20 for adults.
Online registration is available at active.com. Search for ‘Norwich’ on the homepage.
Paper applications can be picked up at the Norwich Family YMCA, the NHS and NMS main offices, and Gus’ Steakhouse, and must be postmarked by Friday, April 6. There will be an opportunity to register from 8-8:45 a.m. on the day of the race.
There will be awards for first, second, and third place winners in both the male and female categories.
