Mid-York Concert Band announces 3rd annual salute to armed forces
NORWICH – For the third straight year, the Mid-York Concert Band will be performing a tribute to the men and women of the United States' armed forces as part of its spring concert on Sunday, May 20 at 2 p.m.
The concert will take place in the Norwich High School auditorium and is free to attend, though donations will be accepted. Music director Mark Sands has confirmed that like the 2017 Spring Concert, a portion of this spring's program will be dedicated to honoring the nation's veterans.
Based in Norwich, the Mid-York Concert Band is comprised of musicians from surrounding communities, including Madison, Morrisville, Oneonta, Oxford, and Sherburne. Band members are inviting community members to attend the concert, especially the area's veterans.
This year, the Mid-York Concert Band will be joined by the Norwich High School Madrigal Singers, under the direction of Mary Williams, to perform, "Armed Forces, The Pride of America."
Also featured in the program will be a rendition of the popular baseball classic, "Casey at the Bat," narrated by Jack Doyle. Doyle is a retired U.S. Postal Worker who has been involved in community theater since 1980, having performed in over 50 productions. He has also served as director of music at the Sidney United Methodist Church for the last 32 years, and director of the Sidney Community Band for 12 years.
Other tunes featured at the concert will include the Spanish March "Amparito Roca" by Jaime Texidor, selections from Henry Mancini's "The Great Race," Gershwin's "Strike Up the Band" arranged by Warren Barker, audience participation number "On The Mall," and more.
