Afton uses fifth inning surge to top Lady Spartans for MAC road win

UNATEGO – The Lady Crimson Knights took no time to score on the road Tuesday, scoring their first three runs of the game in their first at-bats before going on to win 11-6 Tuesday at Unatego.

The Lady Spartans answered with a run over their own in the bottom of the first inning.

Afton added another run in the second inning, creating a 4-1 lead after an inning and a half of play. Unatego, however, tacked on two more runs in bottom half to close the gap down to one run.

In the third inning of play, the Crimson Knights extended their lead by scoring four runs to make the score 8-3. Again, Unatego found a way to score two more runs, keeping the game within reach.

It was in the fifth where Afton was finally able to create a safe lead as they rallied for another three run inning, tallying their 11th run of the game. Unatego was unable to score a run again until the sixth but Afton’s pitcher Tracy Hatton held the Spartans to just one run as the Crimson Knights held on for the 11-6 win.

Afton’s Makaela Mills and Taylor Shultz each had a double in the win.
