Greene sweeps match; Norwich loses by 1 to senior Spartans
GREENE – The Trojans of Greene swept Hancock at the tennis courts on Tuesday, winning the match 5-0 for the home win.
The Trojans’ top singles player, Kevin Gyurik took the first set win with a 7-5 tiebreaker over Michael Argiros of Hancock. The two continue to play a close match but Gyurik again won the second set 6-4, taking the point for Greene.
Brandon Whitaker of the home Trojans dominated his match taking both set with scores of 6-0 and 6-3 as he defeated Hancock’s Porter Crawson.
In the final singles match, Ryan Callan of Hancock gave Garrett Anders a run for the match win in the first set as the two ended with a 7-6 tiebreaker. However, the set was in favor of Anders, giving him the one set lead. In the second set, Anders took care of Callan early, putting him away with a set score of 6-3.
On the doubles side, first doubles partners Mary Borchardt and Sophia Brown of Greene won their two sets 6-1 and 6-2, giving the Trojans their fourth team point of the match.
The final match of the event was between Tommy Tran and Kelly Darling of Greene versus Makenna Loucks and Trinity Crawson. The match favors the Trojans’ doubles team as they took both sets 6-0, giving Greene the match sweep.
The Trojans are scheduled to be in action again on Thursday when they travel to Delhi. Match time is for 4:30 p.m.

NORWICH – Playing one day after their opening match, Norwich was in action once again at home as they took on non-league opponent, the Maine-Endwell Spartans. With the match decided by one team point, Maine-Endwell took the 4-3 win over the host Purple Tornado in large part due to their veteran core.
Top singles Freddy Purpora of the Spartans defeated Josiah Shaver in straight sets to take the first team point of the match. Following their senior leader was Maine-Endwell’s Carson Truman and Logan Howard, also topping the Norwich second and third singles.
Truman grabbed set scores of 6-0 and 6-2 over the Purple Tornado’s Zayne Harper while his teammate, Howard took the point for his team by winning his match 6-3 and 6-0.
Norwich did steal a singles point with fourth singles Matt Giglio’s match win over Jason Bertoni. Giglio scored big as he recorded set scores with a 6-4 and 6-0.
The Purple Tornado grabbed two of the three matches on the doubles side as both first and second teams played very good Tennis according to head coach John Stewart.
First doubles partners Nathan Christopherson and Austin Benenati of the Tornado took their match in straight sets, downing the Spartans Spencer Terry and Zachary Green with scores of 6-4 in both sets.
Carson Maynard and Zac Marsh, Norwich’s second doubles took the match in three sets. Maynard and Marsh grabbed the first set with a score of 6-2 but Maine-Endwell’s Derek Buffington and Sam Giordano answered with a second set win of 6-3 to force a third.
In the final set of the match for the two, Maynard and Marsh played a strong third set as described by Stewart, taking the team point with a 6-2 win.
The third doubles between Maine-Endwell’s veterans Aaron Cummings and John Ingalls took down the youngsters of Norwich. Fighting hard in the match was Jonathan Ryan and Jahlil Jones but they were unable to score a set as the Spartans won in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2.
“We had three solid points but couldn’t muster the fourth. The Spartans seniors came through for them, beating us in first, second, third singles and third doubles in straight sets,” said Stewart.
Norwich goes back to divisional play on Wednesday as they play last year’s divisional champs, Chenango Forks. Scheduled start time for the match is at 4 p.m.
