Marauders first season appearance on field ends with a win; Norwich outhits Warriors in tough loss
LITTLE FALLS – Cody Beckwith pitched 6 innings giving up three earned runs and striking out six batters in Sherburne-Earlville’s first game of the 2018 season on Tuesday.
Helping his pitcher’s cause was catcher Jordan Zimmerman at the plate, batting 2-for-4 with a triple.
Little Falls grabbed a 2-1 lead after their at-bats of the first inning.
In the second, Sherburne-Earlville posted six runs on the scoreboard, taking a commanding 7-2 lead.
After the scoreless third by the Marauders, Sherburne-Earlville tacked on one run in both the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead.
Attempting a late game comeback was the home team as Little Falls rallied for three runs. The Marauders, however, ended the effort to close out the game with a final of 9-7.
“I am very proud of the effort we displayed tonight,” said Sherburne-Earlville head coach Jay Tackabury. “It was the first time we’ve been on a field all season. We struggled defensively, which is something to be expected with the weather and limited time outside.
“Cody pitched great, his curveball was sharp as he was able to keep Little Falls’ hitters guessing. A lot of credit goes to catcher Jordan Zimmerman who not only hit well, but called a great game behind the plate.”
Beckwith finished six strikeouts on the night.
Sherburne-Earlville totalled 10 hits at the plate for the contest. Ben Osborne and Mitch Doing each had two RBI’s and Kyle Cole recorded a double with an RBI.
The Marauders are scheduled to take the field again on Friday, April 13 when they host Holland Patent at 4:30 p.m.

Chenango Valley 6, Norwich 3
BINGHAMTON – After six and a half weeks of practice, Norwich put on a nice hitting display on the road against Chenango Valley, recording one more hit than the home team.
The defensive play of the outfielder for the Warriors, however, came up with major-league like plays to take away more hits that would have ultimately led to more Purple Tornado runs in their 6-3 win over Norwich.
In the third, Norwich’s J.T. Vinal drove a shot down the third baseline, sending the ball to left side of the outfield. Chenango Valley’s left fielder made an on-the-run, over the shoulder grab, robbing Vinal of what would have been an extra base hit and runners scoring.
The Purple was held scoreless through the first six innings of the game, in large part to the great plays that both the left-fielder and center-fielder made as well as a few base-running errors.
On the mound to start for the Tornado was Marcus Cashman. Cashman pitched four innings with five strikeouts in the loss. In the fifth, Mike Trevisani took over in relief and struck out one batter in his two innings on the pitching rubber.
At the plate, Norwich had just one batter strikeout for the game as they recorded seven hits on the night.
The Purple’s Tanner Franklin went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s in the batter’s box while teammate Keegan Wright had one hit in two at-bats with a run batted in as well.
“For our first time out, I am happy with the way our guys played tonight,” said Purple Tornado head coach Rich Turnbull. “We didn’t hang out heads in give up. We rallied in the seventh to get our three runs.
“What it really came down to was, CV just had better plays in the field. This was their third game played this season and you could tell they had more preparation. We need to make sure we take advantage of our offensive opportunities in future games.”
Norwich left seven base-runners stranding of the course of seven innings.
The Tornado are hoping to host their make-up game with Oneonta, a game that was postponed from last week, later today. Scheduled start time of the contest is 4:30 p.m.
