300 pigs die in New Berlin barn fire Thursday
NEW BERLIN – An early morning barn fire at a pig farm in New Berlin Thursday claimed the lives of approximately 300 pigs.
New Berlin Fire Chief Barry Jacobs said the fire at 107 Clark Lane off of County Road 29 was called in at 1:07 a.m. Thursday, and that there was not much that could be done.
Jacobs said New Berlin and six other agencies responded to the scene. He said they were fighting the fire until 8:53 a.m.
When the first crews arrived at the scene the barn housing the animals was engulfed in flames and fire fighters focused their efforts on controlling the flames to protect other nearby buildings and animals, reported Chenango County Fire Coordinator Matthew Beckwith.
"It was fully involved when they got there. Basically the entire building was burning. The fire was throughout the roof and coming out the windows," said Beckwith.
The cause of the fire is undetermined and still under investigation. Jacobs said heat lamps in the barn could have been a potential cause.
Fire departments from Edmeston, Norwich, North Norwich, Pittsfield, South New Berlin, and West Edmeston responded to the scene.
