Jury reviews murder trial's evidence during deliberations
NORWICH – The jury in the Jeremy Coates' murder trial began its deliberations Tuesday, and within an hour of beginning deliberations the jurors requested additional information from the court.
Coates, 47, of Greene, is accused of killing David Green in September 2016 and is charged with first-degree murder, assault, and robbery.
The jury began deliberations Tuesday and are still trying to agree on a verdict.
The jury made several requests from the court to provide them with crime scene photos, written copy of the charges against Coates, and all of the text messages in submitted as evidence.
After a small debate between the prosecution and the defense on how many text messages to print out, Chenango County Judge Frank Revoir called the jury into the court to ask them for clarification.
Revoir asked the jury if they needed all of the 1000-plus pages of text messages ranging from September 18 through September 27, 2016, and contrary to some jurors shaking their heads no, the jury foreman asked that they receive them all.
The jury said they would like to receive the written charges before reviewing the other evidence, but received the printed out text messages, included with crime scene photos, around the same time as the written charges.
The jury continued deliberations until 4 p.m., and they will continue at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Check www.evesun.com for updates once a verdict is reached.
