Spartans fight through Bobcats with walk-off single; Afton’s early lead sets up big win

BAINBRIDGE – Unatego’s Paul Slawson knocked in the the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh, scoring teammate Trevor Wincester from second to give the Spartans the 9-8 win a over Bainbridge-Guilford in a Midstate Athletic Conference contest Wednesday.
Bainbridge-Guilford had an early 2-1 lead after the first. The two teams each scored three in the second, giving the Bobcats a 5-4 advantage.
Both held each other scoreless in the third and fourth, allowing B-G to keep the lead through the first four innings played.
In the top of the fifth, the Bobcats added another two to extend their lead to three runs.
The Spartans, however, responded in the bottom of the inning tying the contest at 7-7.
Again in the seventh, B-G took the lead by scoring one run and giving them a big at a win.
After a lead-off walk was allowed by Bainbridge-Guilford’s Tom Palmatier, the Bobcats’ picked up two back-to-back outs.
Down to their final out, Unatego’s Slawson stepped up to the plate and lined the shot that scored Wincester from second. The single by Slawson a his second hit in three at bats for the afternoon.
Slawson picked up the win on the mound after coming on in relief for Spartans starter Andrew Santobuono in the sixth inning.
Bainbridge-Guilford’s Parker Luca went 2-for-5 in his at-bats for the afternoon, recording a RBI while teammate Garrett Ives had a strong day at the plate with three hits in four plate appearances. Ives scored twice in the game, accounting for two of the eight runs scored by the Bobcats.
B-G recorded zero errors defensively and had 11 hits as a team on the offensive side of Wednesday’s game.
The Bobcats will look to pick up a win Friday when they host Deposit-Hancock. Pending the field conditions following the snow and rain forecasted for Oxford on Thursday, Unatego is scheduled face the Blackhawks at 4:30 p.m.

Afton 12, Deposit-Hancock 2
HANCOCK – The Crimson Knights continued on their war path Wednesday, taking a 12-2 win over the home team, Deposit-Hancock.
The first two innings of play ended with Afton scoring four in each, picking up the early 8-0 lead.
The Crimson Knights then added one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and their last run of the game in the sixth.
As a team, Afton recorded nine RBI’s and eight stolen bases. Leading the way for Afton was starting pitcher Colin Nabinger, going 3-for-5 at the dish. Teammate Tyler King went 2-for-3 with a double.
Nabinger threw a total of 106 pitched in six sinnings of work, 75 were called strikes to ring up 15 Deposit/Hancock batter. King relieved him in the seventh inning and Vincent Caiati was behind the plate, calling pitches for both Nabinger and King.
Cole Russell, Owen Wormuth and Caden Fortuanato split time on the mound for Deposit/Hancock, combining for 11 strikeouts but gave up 10 hits to Crimson Knight batters.
Afton is again on the road Thursday at Delhi, pending weather conditions. If the game is played, the schduled start time is 4:30 p.m.
