Tornado nearly pulls off upset win over Seton
BINGHAMTON – For the second game in a row, Norwich’s opposition called upon their ace to shut down the bats for the Purple Tornado batters. However, it worked for their opponent in both games as Seton came from behind to top Norwich, 7-6 at NYSEG Stadium Wednesday night.
Norwich got on the board in the first inning when Marcus Cashman singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring Tanner Franklin from third. Mike Trevisani, J.T. Vinal and Cashman all crossed the plate in the first when Eli Rodriguez hit a bases clearing triple to give the Purple a 4-0 lead.
All nine batters in the line-up batted in the inning.
Seton began to chip away at the lead in the second, scoring two. The Saints added another in the third.
Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Seton’s Finbarr Huff stepped to the plate and singled on the first pitch of the at bat, driving in two runs and taking their first lead of the game.
Tanner Sinicki led the Seton Catholic to victory on the pitcher’s mound when he came in for relief in the sixth. With no hits hits and zero runs in the inning, Sinicki allowed just one Norwich batter to reach first with a walk.
Mason Vaughan, a Division-I commit next year and Seton number one pitcher in their rotation, recorded the last three outs to earning the save for the Saints but the Purple were able to score one against him.
Trevisani took the loss for Norwich, giving up seven runs on 11 hits over five and one-third innings.
Norwich collected nine hits on the day. Justin Bates scored the final run for the Purple in the top of the seventh. Bate, Vinal, and Rodriguez all had multiple hits for Norwich.
“Norwich Baseball is starting to get some respect against other STAC schools,” said Tornado head coach Rich Turnbull. “That’s twice now that a team had to bring in their top pitcher to shut us down. The tide is turning on Norwich Baseball.”
The Purple did record three errors during the game but Turnbull said the game was played better than their last game against Binghamton.
“We played really good ball against Seton. I was happy with everything we did. I think as long as we carry the momentum into this weekend, we can end up with a couple of wins.”
Norwich takes on Chenango Forks in a scheduled home game but the game may switch to the Blue Devils field on Friday. Game time is 4:30 p.m. The Purple are also scheduled to host a double-header mini tournament on Saturday. The games on the weekend will start at 11 a.m.
