Knights cling to early lead, holds on for win against Sidney’s late game rally

SIDNEY – The Warriors of Sidney chipped away at Afton’s 11-run lead in their last at-bats of the game Monday, but Afton was able to get the final out needed to put away Sidney in a 12-10 win on the road.
Sidney scored nine runs in the comeback attempt of the seventh inning but Matt Hoskins fly-out to first baseman, Vincent Caiati, sealed the win for Afton.
Afton got on the board in the second inning when Brady Buttice hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring Antonio Derrigo. Buttice scored later in the frame along with teammate Zach Alford, who scored on a wild pitch, giving the Crimson Knights a 4-0 lead.
Afton put up six additional runs in the fifth inning, taking 10-1 advantage.
The Warriors big inning was driven by many singles and walks drawn by their batters.
Colin Nabinger earned the victory for the Crimson Knights. Nabinger started the game on the mound surrendering one run on seven hits six and a third innings of work. Caiati came on in relief for the bottom seventh and lasted threw two-thirds of an inning out of the bullpen.
Nabinger came back in to finished the game, earning the save. He tallied 11 strikeouts on the rubber.
The Crimson Knights host Unadilla Valley on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Oneonta 17, Norwich 3
ONEONTA – Norwich had a hard time getting anything going against Oneonta Yellowjackets’ starter Sean MacInerney as the Purple were handed a 17-3 loss.
MacInerney pitched six solid innings striking out eight Tornado batters, only giving up three walk but it was the Yellowjackets offense that did the damage against the visiting team as they put up 11 runs in the first inning.
With the hot bats going early, Oneonta took out Norwich’s starter Eli Rodriguez early. Justin Bates came on in relief along with Tom Flanagan, Jon Clarke and Keegan Wright.
Hector Gonzalez hit a home run while teammates Teddy McGraw, John Mikolaicyk and Ryan Packard all doubled. MacInerney helped himself with a triple at the plate.
Norwich scored one in the fourth and added two more runs in the top of the sixth, cutting the Yellowjackets lead down to 12-3.
Oneonta, however, scored five more runs in the bottom of the sixth for a final of 17-3.
Norwich will host the Yellowjackets on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., looking for a better outcome in game two of the back-to-back.

Deposit-Hancock 15, Unadilla Valley 5
NEW BERLIN – Deposit-Hancock tallied at least one run in all innings but the second and sixth to spoil Unadilla Valley’s home game on Monday.
The Eagles and the Storm were tied 1-1 after the first and held the same score following the second inning.
It was in the third inning that Deposit/Hancok took over the game when they scored four in their at-bats. They added two in the fourth and three in the fifth to make it 10-2 before adding another five in their final plate appearance of the game.
Unadilla Valley added to their two run tally when the scored three in the bottom of the seventh, the Storm’s largest offensive inning. Andrew Jackson and Tim Postma had doubles while Payton Stirone posted a triple as the team recorded eight hits on the day.
The Eagles finished the game with 13 hits, six of which were for extra bases.
Ray Rynearson, who got the win on the mound for Deposit/Hancock, helped himself with a double. Teammates James Bowie, Caleb Walker and Cole Russell all hit doubles while Darren Shaver went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a home run.
Stirone recorded the loss as he started for UV, lasting for three innings with four strikeouts. He allowed five hits and five runs on the mound.
Unadilla Valley will host Walton on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
