Child Advocacy Center recognizes child abuse prevention month
NORWICH – In raising awareness of child abuse prevention month, Chenango County’s Child Advocacy Center has placed blue and silver pinwheels throughout the community, held abuse prevention events, and received an award by the Chenango County Board of Supervisors.
The Norwich Child Advocacy Center is a non-profit agency whose primary goal is to provide a safe, child friendly atmosphere to children who are victims of a crime; via sexual/physical or witness to violence. Its referrals come from local law enforcement and child protective services.
“Our staff works to provide support for the victim and caregivers, provide education to the community, and provide a multi-disciplinarian approach to the investigation,” said Chenango County Child Advocacy Center Coordinator, Sarah McIntosh-Posson.
On April 24, representatives of the center appeared at the Chenango County United Way annual celebration to help promote child abuse prevention, and throughout the month they’ve placed 133 blue and silver pinwheels placed at the Child Advocacy Center, Norwich Police Department, YMCA, and at the Mental Health Behavioral Offices.
“Each pinwheel represents a victim the center helped in the last year, and we hope to help as many as possible as awareness increases,” said McIntosh-Posson.
In response to their impact on the community, on April 9, the Chenango County Child Advocacy Center received a Proclamation Award from the Chenango County Board of Supervisors to recognize the national child abuse prevention and sexual assault awareness in Chenango County.
Today, they’ll honor one of their own members for their outstanding service, and present them with the Guardian Award.
“We’ll be presenting Guardian Award to one of the multi-disciplinarian team members that have shown a real passion for, an understanding of, and promotion of victims’ rights; helping them find assistance with services; or someone who has made an impact on lives of victims of a crime,” she said.
