Seventh inning errors punish Marauders in loss to Cooperstown

SHERBURNE – The Marauders of Sherburne-Earlville began a comeback in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, pulling within one run of the Cooperstown Hawkeyes. However, in the top of the seventh, Cooperstown added three runs to take home the 8-3 win over S-E on Tuesday afternoon.
The Marauders’ Kyle Cole scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Ben Osborne. In the next inning, Cole drove two with his base-clearing double, cutting the Hawkeye four run lead down to one.
Coming in from the bullpen in top of the fifth, Dawson Lagoe shutdown the bats of Cooperstown through one and two-thirds of work.
In the seventh, the Hawkeyes picked up their runs due to the two errors behind Lagoe for the Marauders.
“We hit the ball well again as a whole for the second game in a row.” said S-E Head Coach Jay Tackabury. “However, we lacked timely hitting and continued to make mental and physical errors that cost us most of the runs. We have to clean up our defense if we’re going to be successful this season.”
Cooperstown’s Erik Dyfenroth earned the victory on the mound and teammate Sam Bonderoff went 2-for-4 at the plate to help his pitcher earn the win.
Gabe Irwin was S-E’s starter on the mound and pitched a nice game, preventing many Cooperstown batter from reaching the bases during first, third and fourth innings.
The Hawkeyes took an early 4-1 lead in the top of the second and added another run in the top of the fifth before the Marauders comeback effort began in the bottom of the frames.
Cole went 3-for-3 and had the game’s only extra base hits. Irwin went 2-for-3 at the plate with two singles.
Monday’s game at home for the Marauders, defensive miscues led to their unfortunate 10-5 loss to the Adirondack Wildcats.
Sherburne-Earlville recorded eight errors in the game, giving the visiting Wildcats seven unearned runs on the scoreboard.
“Our defense let us down,” said Tackabury. “We didn’t field the ball well at all. In order to win ballgames, we have to catch and throw and we simply didn’t do that.
“I was pleased with the way we hit but runs on the board determine the ballgame.”
The Marauders recorded eight hits total, outshining the Wildcats at the plate as Adirondack had just four hits.
Vinny Albertina, Irwin and Lagoe each had one hit in the game for S-E while Cole and Osborne collected two hits apiece.
Osborne also started the game and threw three innings, allowing no hits and no earned runs.
Sherburne-Earlville is scheduled to host Herkimer Wednesday afternoon but could be postponed due to rain in the weather forecast. If the game is played, the contest will start at 4:30 p.m.
