Lady Blackhawks pick up second win of year with home victory; Harpursville Hornets buzz past Afton

OXFORD – On just four hits total for the game, Oxford scored one run in the first, three in the second and an additional three runs in the fifth to take their second victory of the season over the Storm from Unadilla Valley Tuesday with a final of 7-2.

The Blackhawks got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Jessie Howe stole home to score run. Howe reached the base path by hitting a fly ball single to center field.

Tallying three runs in the third, Caitlyn Quigley hit a single to left field on the first pitch of the inning. She scored two batters later when Oralls grounded out to second base.

With two outs in the inning, Oxford brought in another two runs before Unadilla Valley recorded the third out by a ground ball hit to second baseman Mia Stirone.

The Blackhawks added another three runs in the fifth to secure the victory.

The Lady Storm did add a run in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, it was Regan Sabines scoring from second on Kirsten White’s double.

One inning later, Novalee Davis scored on a passed ball. She reached base with a fly ball double to center field.

Allison Beckwith was the winning pitcher, allowing five hits and striking out 17.

Bella Russo took the loss for Unadilla Valley. She surrendered four hits over six innings, striking out four. Of the seven runs scored against her on the mound, only three were earned.

Hannah Ryan’s double led the at-bats for Oxford. Lilliana Gonzalez, Quigley, Howe and Ryan all went 1-for-3 at the plate for the Blackhawks.

Davis went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Unadilla Valley in hits.

The Blackhawks are in Afton on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. while the Storm is scheduled for a game Wednesday at home against Walton. UV and Walton will start at 4:30 p.m. as well.

Harpursville 13, Afton 0

AFTON – The Lady Hornets of Harpursville started the scoring early in the first and continued through out the course of the seven innings played Tuesday afternoon. The Hornets went on to win 13-0 as Harley Bunker shut down Afton’s bats, holding the Lady Crimson Knights to just four hits in the game.

Harpursville scored two in the first, second and third innings to make the score 6-0 before their big five run frame in the top of the fourth.

The Hornets scored all five on a two-out rally that started with Bethany Niles ground ball single. An additional two singles, a walk and two drop third strikes allowed Harpursville runners to cross the plate. Maryjane Kappauf, Mackenzie Robertson and Bunker all contributed in the big inning with RBI’s.

Afton’s first hit of the game came with a single by Madison Baciuska in the first inning. The other hits from the Crimson Knights came in the third and fourth innings.

Madison Riley, Abby Beaulieu, and Makaela Mills were the other batters who recorded singles for Afton.

The Crimson Knights defense held the Hornets scoreless in the fifth, retiring the only three Harpursville batters they stepped to the plate.

Bunker got the start for Harpursville, pitching a complete game. She gave up four hits while striking out six.

Tracy Hatton took to the rubber for Afton to start the game. She allowed ten hits and 11 runs over five innings, striking out six and walking one. Her teammate, Hannah Tracy, threw two innings in relief.

Abbie Livermore led Harpursville Hornets with three hits in four at bats and three runs scored.

The Crimson Knights will look to bounce back against the Lady Trojans of Greene Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
