S-E junior wins division in regional vocal competition
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville student, Rebecca Turner, earned first place in the junior grade-level division at the Central New York Association of Music Teachers (CNYAMT) Vocal Competition on April 21.
"After I sang I knew I had done my very best," said Turner. "I’m not sure I had ever sang those songs as well as I had that day."
Competitors were asked to sing a song in a foreign language dating back to the 16th and 18th centuries, as well as an English song from any time period, and a third song selected at the discretion of the students and their teachers.
Turner sang "Nel cor piu non mi sento" by Giovannia Paisiello, "Into the Night" by Clara Edwards, and "Who'll Buy My Lavender" by Edward German.
"When I was listening to everyone else, I could hardly believe that I could compete with all of those extremely talented students," said Turner. "I couldn’t believe I had won my division, and I was so happy to have had such a wonderful experience.”
Turner studies voice with teacher Gayle Ross in Cicero, NY. At Sherburne-Earlville High School, Turner participates in multiple school bands playing the flute and piano, as well as singing in the school's choir.
Turner also plays varsity field hockey, is a member of the National Honor Society, and played the role of Sarah Brown in S-E's production of "Guys and Dolls."
Turner and other division winners were honored at a winner's recital in Syracuse on April 28.
