Springtime in the Guernsey Memorial Library Park

NORWICH – Spring is a little bit late this year, but with the advent of decent weather this week, it is a great time to check out the Guernsey Memorial Library Park. The playground is always ready for the little ones, but the real news this time of year is that the park is also a playground for gardeners and those who would like to learn more about plants and pollinators.

The GML Park was established in the early 1980s, but has been continuously updated and improved. Several organizations have had a hand in its beautification.

The Town & Country Garden Club was responsible for the memorial garden near West Main Street. The rose garden near Guernsey Street is the work of the Norwich Garden Club.

Most recently, the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener Program installed two more gardens: the Pollination Station near Guernsey Street and the Historical Garden near the center of the park. The care and maintenance of the park falls to Library staff Brian Doliver and Eric Russell.

One of the main missions of the library is to promote lifelong learning, and not just through books. The GML Park is part of that mission. To aid the public in learning more about the plantings, the Library recently installed labels identifying species and common names for each variety. Visitors with cell phones can take advantage of QR codes included on the labels that link to detailed information about the species from the United States Department of Agriculture and the Missouri Botanical Gardens.

So while you’re out taking advantage of the beautiful spring weather, drop by the Guernsey Memorial Library Park to enjoy and learn about the plants as they also awaken from their long winter’s naps!
