Tornado netters clinch STAC East; suffers loss in semifinals of conference play
NORWICH – Norwich clinched the East division Friday night in decisive matter, taking all seven points without given up a single set. The last time the Purple Tornado held the title was two years ago.
Norwich reclaimed the championship with undefeated in divisional play.
First doubles partners Austin Benenati and Nate Christopherson finished the regular season undefeated along with Carson Maynard and Zac Marsh at second doubles and Matt Giglio at fourth singles.
“After a two year drought, it’s great to be back on top of the division,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart.
Immediately heading to STAC conference championships on Saturday, Norwich faced a tough team in the Maine-Endwell Spartans.
M-E, in a tough battle, handed the Purple a 6-1 loss.
Stand out play came from Maynard and Marsh with a straight set win, leading to the lone point scored for Norwich. With that win, the team of Maynard and Marsh remain the only undefeated team the Tornado.
“M-E was ready for us today,” said Stewart. “They have 11 seniors and their maturity showed. We played nervous tennis and did not make the shots that got us the division title. I am hoping that this experience will help us at sectionals next week.”
Norwich heads to Maine-Endwell Thursday for the start of sectional play. Play starts at 10 a.m.
