Evening Sun exclusive: Chobani explores major expansion at South Edmeston facility
COLUMBUS – Sources close to Chobani have said the company is exploring an expansion of its facilities in the Columbus area and its senior vice president sent out an official response.
The confirmed sources, who we are keeping confidential, said Chobani is exploring, an "opportunity to significantly expand the South Edmeston facility."
After asking for official comment and confirmation Wednesday, Chobani representatives did not deny it was looking into significantly expanding it’s local facilities.
"As a growth company, we explore opportunities on an ongoing basis to fuel our momentum," said Chobani Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs Michael Gonda.
He said he could not discuss the specifics.
"While we have nothing to announce at this time, we're committed to our continued growth in Central New York and proud of our current contributions and the future opportunity here," he said.
Currently Chobani employs nearly a 1,000 people at its local Chenango County facilities. The Chobani manufacturing plant is located in the Hamlet of South Edmeston, at 669 County Road 25 in the Town of Columbus. The company spent millions on constructing and adding on to the the 415,000 square feet facility since 2005. The company also has its corporate headquarters at 147 State Highway 320 in the Town of Norwich.
According to the source, the expansion could allow the company to produce different kinds of products and lead to, "significant additional jobs and investments."
They added that the expansion could also result in significant increases in milk consumption over time, and all milk used at the facility is sourced from New York State farms.
According to New York State figures and Chobani, the company's average salary is 42% higher than the median income in Chenango County.
Chobani also reported contributing $120,000 of donations in 2017 to local groups. Employees also contributed 2,500 hours to charitable causes and handed out more than 175,000 Chobani products in the central New York region in 2017.
