NORWICH – Considered by locals as "the biggest non-political, political event of the year,” Lobsterfest draws hundreds of political pundits every summer. The 44th annual Lobsterfest organized by the Chenango County Republican Committee is slated for Sunday, July 22 from noon to 4 p.m.
Chenango County Republican Committee Chairman Tom Morrone said this year, candidate for New York State Governor Marcus Molinaro will be in attendance at Lobsterfest, along with potential candidate for New York State Attorney General Joe Holland.
"We should be pleased with both of those candidates being Upstaters, and with that I wish everyone good luck and look forward to the election this fall," said Morrone.
The event will be held at the Northeast Classic Car Museum in Norwich, a venue that Morrone says is opportune for out-of-towners who aren't familiar with the museum.
“[Lobsterfest] will be outdoors under the big tent, and tickets include admission into the museum,” said Morrone. “We've had a great turnout in the past. Everybody liked it, out-of-towners especially enjoyed seeing the museum for the first time.”
Each year, Lobsterfest attracts political aficionados from the local, state, and federal levels to a mixer of seafood and politics. Elected officials, including Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, Senators Fred Akshar and James Seward, and Assemblymen Clifford Crouch and Gary Finch are all expected to attend this year.
Local candidates will also be present, including Supreme Court Judge candidate and current Chenango County District Attorney Joseph McBride, and incumbent for Chenango County Treasurer, William Craine.
In the absence of event founder Clarence “Rapp” Rappleyea, former Assembly Minority Leader, who passed away in September of 2016, event organizers have been determined to continue his legacy for years to come at Lobsterfest.
Since Rappleyea first rolled out Lobsterfest in 1975, the social event has been a summertime staple in Chenango County.
Morrone predicts that over 400 people will make their way to Lobsterfest this year. More than a platform to discuss hot-button issues, Lobsterfest doubles as the only fundraising event of the year for the Chenango County Republican Committee and its annual endeavors in donating to Chenango County Dollars for Scholars.
More importantly, Lobsterfest serves as an opportunity to briefly set aside political differences.
“People come to spend time with their friends and neighbors and meet with their representatives,” said Morrone. “It doesn't matter your affiliation. All are welcome to enjoy good company and good food.”
The 2018 Lobsterfest will be catered by Tuller's Catering and Party Services of New Berlin.
Tickets are $60 apiece, and are available by calling Morrone at (607) 226-3271.
