Greene boys and Storm girls place second at MAC Championships; UV’s Oglesby cleans-up with blue ribbons
SIDNEY – On a cloudy, high wind day at the Sidney High School track, the Midstate Athletic Conference (MAC) Championships saw a few times slowed down for the athletes competing. It didn’t hold back the students from doing what they have done all season and that’s win.
Unadilla Valley’s Julia Oglesby won four individual events for the Storm. Placing first in the 100, the 200, the long jump and the high jump, Oglesby dominated the MAC Championships.
In the long jump, she edged out the expected favorite from Delhi, Logan Bruce.
Bruce and Oglesby have been battling in both the long and high jump throughout the season. Oglesby now holds the advantage in the two events after the MAC meet.
Earlier this season, the Storm track and field athlete took down Bruce in the high jump and currently is ranked at the top jumper in Division-II for New York State.
Her teammate, Molly Avolio won the shot put with a throw at the distance of 33 feet-1 inch. Avolio edged out the second place finisher by three quarters of an inch to be crowed the MAC Champion of the event.
Kyleigh George’s time of 17.78 finished second in the 100 meter hurdles for UV. She landed in second in the triple jump with her distance of 33 feet-1 inch.
The 4x800 meter relay team of Paige Catena, Sophia Off, Sierra Schrag and Rebecca Ruffino finished in 11:25.16. The team took second while Harpursville-Afton came in behind them for third and the girls foursome from Oxford trickled in for fourth.
In the 400 meter dash, Madison Rice of Greene raced to a time of 1:05.89. With her time, she stood one stop from the stop of the podium. Isabel Mendoza of the Lady Storm followed in right behind her with a time of 1:06.45 for third place.
Also collecting points for their teams in the event were UV’s Leah Gorrell (fifth) and Greene’s Haley DeJager (sixth).
Finishing second place in the 4x100 meter relay was Milla Gonzalez, Emma Barbosa, Olivia Kelsey and Jadyn Munson. The team from Delhi took the top spot of the event and the team from Unadilla Valley came in third for the race.
The Lady Bobcats of Bainbridge-Guilford grabbed their spot on the podium in the event, placing fifth with a time of 57.99. Kristen Chambers, Aliya Pickens, Mckeyli Decker, and Zamira Caldwell each sprinted their leg of their race for the overall time.
Chambers placed third in the 100 meter hurdles, behind George with a time of 18.34. Coming in shortly after her was Avolio for fourth place.
The 4x400 meter relay race saw four Chenango County teams in the top six.
Alyssa Davenport, Chloe Parks, DeJager and Rice each raced their one lap around the track for a complied time of 4:26.31 to place second in the event.
Placing third was Katelynn Ingraham, Sylvia Yates, Ellie Ryan and Kelsey of Oxford. They were closely followed by the team from UV. Mendoza, Ruffino, Forrell and Destiny Merlo finished with a time of 4:37.42 and for fourth place.
Sneaking in to grab the final podium spot of the event was the team from Harpursville-Afton.
On the boys side of the championship meet, Ben Avolio placed second in the 400 for Unadilla Valley. Winning by nearly one full second was Greene’s Spencer Klumpp.
Klumpp’s time of 53.29 crowned him as the 400 meter dash MAC Champion for the season. His teammate Nate Barry finished in third while UV’s Jordan Mirabito came in just .3 of second for fourth.
Coy Austin of the Trojans placed second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.01 seconds. Tristan Austin finished just one place behind him and just .06 seconds off Coy’s time.
Oxford’s Xavier Cruz placed fourth in the event and B-G’s Nick Petruoni finished in the final points spot for the race.
Matthew Johnson placed second in the 1600 for Harpursville-Afton in a time of 4:47.50.
The 4x100 meter team of Coy Austin, Nate Erickson, Spencer Klumpp and Tristan Austin grabbed the MAC Championship for the event, racing to a time of 46.65 seconds.
Petrutoni placed highest for Bainbridge-Guilford in the long jump, finishing second with his distance of 19 feet-7.25 inches. His teammate, Triston Wilson also placed second for B-G, leaping to a height of 5 feet-2 inches in the high jump.
All of these competitors and many others will take part in the Section IV Class C and D events on Wednesday. Their meets will start at 4 p.m. The Class C meet will take place at Sidney High School while Class D competes at Marathon.
