Garden Clubs of Chenango County competes in national competition
CHENANGO COUNTY – The Garden Clubs of Chenango County competed in last years United States Gardening Competition, and after taking home the first place award in the state category, the group is still waiting to hear how they faired nationally.
According to Garden Clubs of Chenango County General Show Chairperson Edith Holtz, the garden clubs in Chenango County were founded around 1973, and have been actively participating in flower show competitions held by the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State and America for many years.
The competing, “near gardens” are compromised by gardening clubs including the clubs in Oxford, Norwich, and Greene.
“In 2016, we won first place in both the state and nation competitions held by the Federated Garden Clubs of America,” said Holtz.
Holtz said the garden clubs have received a first place award for last years New York State level competition, but are waiting until October to find out if they won on the national level.
“We’re feeling pretty confident, we put on an excellent show and with the help of the 40-50 people who attended; I think we’re going to be receiving first place in the national competition as well,” she said.
Holtz said even though the clubs have done well at competitions, they are slowly losing members over time.
“For those who might be interested in joining, we’re going to be holding our 2018 flower show in August, and you can meet us there to find out more,” she said.
She said the groups throughout Chenango County are always looking for new members, and hopes to see some new faces at this years flower shower.
