Hundreds compete in 56th General Clinton Canoe Regatta
BAINBRIDGE – This year’s canoe regatta had racers from all over America competing to be number one in different events, including the world’s longest single day race, the 70 mile canoe endurance competition.
This year’s Canoe Regatta was a four day event with a wrestling tournament, hall of fame induction ceremony, music festival, youth talent showcase, firework shows, along with several other sports competitions.
Winners of the races can be found on the race’s website, www.canoeregatta.org.
“A few years back, my goal was to get the regatta to the 50th. Now, six years later and still chairman, many people ask why I’m still doing this,” said event chairman, John Harmon.
“My answer is simple: the Clinton is one of the greatest marathon canoe races in the world,” said Harmon.
According to Harmon, the Canoe Regatta appeals to so many people because of it’s extremely challenging 70-mile race, along with the carnival, fireworks, and other fun things available during the weekend long event.
“We are proud to have continued this for 56 years. We have a great group of volunteers that dedicate their holiday weekend to make sure the tradition continues,” he said.
Bainbridge Fire Commissioner David Worden was one of the volunteers present at the regatta, and has been assisting with the event for several years.
“It’s an amazing event that attracts people from all over the world, and I’m happy to be a part of it,” said Worden.
According to Worden, the event has required the fire department’s assistance in the past after a fire raged through several of the event’s buildings.
“In 2002 a fire broke out near the chicken barbecue, and before it could be extinguished several other structures caught fire,” he said.
Worden said fortunately it was the only major fire in the regatta’s history, and he added that the Bainbridge Fire Department will continue attending the event to help out and prevent any potential fires in the future.
