Key witness and convicted killer face sentence for Oxford murder
NORWICH – The two defendants held responsible for the death of David Green, of Oxford, will be sentenced in Chenango County Court today.
Melissa Crispell, who accepted a plea deal and testified against the other defendant in the case is expected to receive 15 to 25 years in prison.
Jeremy Coates, who was convicted by a jury for carrying out the slaying, will likely serve the rest of his life in prison, without parole.
On April 18, Coates was convicted of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and two counts of first-degree robbery by a jury.
According to District Attorney Joseph McBride, “Jeremy Coates will likely serve life in prison without parole.”
“We’re happy the community is safe, and that this murderer is off of our streets,” said McBride.
Melissa Crispell will also be sentenced for her part in the crime, as part of a plea deal where she pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery in May 2017, she could receive anywhere from 15 to 25 years in prison. Part of the deal specified that Crispell would testify at the murder trial.
During the trial, Crispell said on September 23, 2016, she texted Coates throughout the day, and they made plans to rob Green later that night.
Things took an unexpected turn that night when Coates kicked Green, and hit him with a piece of slate, said Crispell.
According to Crispell, she waited 20 minutes for Coates to leave the home, but once the two got in her vehicle, Coates threatened to do harm to Crispell and her children if she “talked.”
A few days later Coates was arrested for the murder of Green.
