Day 2 punches tickets to New York State Championships for Chenango County athletes

ENDICOTT – The second day of the Section IV State Qualifying meet saw the same type of action as day one. The only difference was the cloudy skies and wind. With threats of thunderstorms in the forecast at Union-Endicott High School, the weather held off for the event to allow the second day to be completed without a hitch.
Right out of the gate, the excitement started as both the girls and boys 100 meter dash finals kicked off the action for day two.
In the girls 100 meter dash final, Julia Oglesby of Unadilla Valley and Milla Gonzalez of Oxford both had spots due to their times raced on day one. Their competition was tough in the loaded meet as the fastest sprinter in New York – Vestal’s Tia Jones – was seeded at the top.
Jones raced to a time of 12.47 and was known to win the race by her lead out in front of the other runners. The battle, however, was for second and third place.
Oglesby and Jones’ teammate, Jecholiah Stephenson, were neck-and-neck throughout the entire straight away of the track and right up the finish line.
It was the Storm sprinter who crossed the finish line first as her head reached before Stephenson, locking in second place overall for the meet. Oglesby came in as the first runner for the Division-II and secured her spot for the state meet.
Oxford’s Gonzalez grabbing a spot on the podium, placing sixth with a time of 13.28 seconds.
Norwich’s Zack Race continued in the fast lane as he placed first overall in the event with a time of 11.06.
Race, who has had trouble with his starts out of the block, got off to a great start in the race. Midway through the race, Race’s fastest gear kicked in and pushed him through the finish line as they raced against the wind.
The Purple Tornado’s Eric Conant was in the pack that wasn’t too far behind Race and crossed the line in fifth place with his time of 11.46 seconds.
Kyleigh George of Unadilla Valley raced to a time of 17.55 during the semifinals race on Wednesday to land a spot in the finals on day two. Running the exact same time as a day earlier, George was one place away from standing on the podium.
Later on in the meet, Race and Conant met the rest of the field in the 200 meter dash. With Race seeded one and Conant seeded two after Wednesday’s preliminary race, the two had targets on their back.
Coming out of the turn, Race took the event over again for a first place finish of 21.94. The next closest opponent to cross the line almost a full second behind.
All sprinters coming in behind Race for the event were in a close, tight pack with all separated by less than half a second. Conant finished in sixth, snagging the final spot on the podium.
The Norwich group of Delilah Geislinger, Riley Marsh, Hailey Colabelli and Caroline Stewart faced the team from Vestal, which included Jones and Stephenson, and were the heavy favorites of the race.
The Purple Tornado foursome placed third overall with a time of 50.92 but finished first in Division-II and will head to states.
On Wednesday, the Oxford Blackhawks’ Ellie Ryan, Emma Barbosa, Milla Gonzalez, Jadyn Munson, members of the 4x100 girls team, set a personal record with a 54.23.
A member of the team stated they set a goal of beating their best time of the year heading into Wednesday semifinals race. The four girls were able to accomplish what they set out to do.
Going into the qualifier on Wednesday, the Norwich 4x100 boys team of Race, Conant, David Berger and Scott Tomanocy were seed at the top and nearly a second a head of every other team competing.
Seeing the sunny, low-win conditions they did on the first day, the team raced to their fastest time of the year, a 43.08, and once again breaking the school record along with the top spot for the finals on Thursday.
Berger jumped out into a great lead for the first leg of the race and handed the baton off to the speedster Race. Race continued to extended the lead down the backside stretch before the smooth transition went to Tomanocy for the final turn of the event. Tomanocy also grew the lead, handling the curve with great strides before handing the baton to Conant for the final stretch of the race. Conant was off and running towards the finish line before any opponents had completed their hand-offs.
Taking the event with a time of 43.60, the Purple Tornado will head to states once again.
Conant and Tomanocy will be joined by Gabe Gawronski and Noah Bufalini for the 4x400 meter relay team as they head to states as the top team in Division-II following Thursday’s meet.
The boys group once again broke the Norwich school record for the event, finishing .5 of a second faster than their already record breaking time this season. The four boys finished second overall in the race, coming in behind the team of Corning.
Caroline Stewart of the Tornado placed second on Wednesday in the long jump and at the time, it was unclear if she had qualified for States. Due to reaching the qualifying standards she reached earlier in the season, she will attend the Championship meet in the long jump event.
Stewart will also attend the championship meet in the triple jump. Stewart knocked out the state standard distance in her first jump of Thursday’s meet and soared to a final distance of 36 feet-2 inches.
Seeded second, Stewart was going into the qualifying event behind Mallorie Turner of Chenango Valley, held the first seed with a distance that was over foot more than Stewart’s. Thursday, however, was Stewart’s day as she upset the top seed by an inch.
Oglesby took the top prize in the girls high jump, clearing the bar at the highest height of 5 feet-4 inches. She will now head to states for three events – 100 meter dash, long jump and high jump. Oglesby has set a school record throughout the season for all three events along with the 200 meter dash.
Elijah Craddock stood on the podium for the boys high jump, attempting to jump at 5 feet-10 inches. Craddock finished in sixth overall for the event. Unfortunately, Craddock was unable to reach the state championship meet as the standard for the event is 6 feet-2 inches.
All athletes who have qualified over the course of the past two days will now have a few days of rest before preparing for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Championship Meet, which will be held on Friday, June 8 and Saturday, June 9 at Cicero-North Syracuse High School in Syracuse.
The first day of action will start for field events at 11 a.m. and on the track at 1:30 p.m. on for mostly semifinals. The 800 meter, 3000 meter, 3200 meter and the hurdling portion of the pentathlon will have finals on Friday.
At 10 a.m. on Saturday, both track events and the field events will start for Championship Saturday.
Tickets for the event can be purchased before the event online at www.nysphsaa.org/Sports/Track-Field-Outdoor or at the gate on the day of the meet. Each day costs $8 for all in attendance.
