Heavy thunderstorm gives early end to AMP racing program Friday

AFTON – The racing program at the Afton Motorsports Park was cancelled when a heavy thunderstorm hit the facility at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening. This was the first rain that hit the facility during the day as it was hot and humid up until the the storm hit.
“It was a situation where no matter what you did, you will be criticized,” said Afton Motorsports Park track promoter Ronnie Ford. “We could have cancelled with the sun out and if it never rained, you will be second guessed.
“Today, we had no rain at all until tonight and at that point, all of the racing teams were either in the pit area preparing for racing or en route to race with us. I would like to say thank you to everyone who came out and supported us tonight before the rain hit. “
Rain checks from Friday night can be used this upcoming racing night. CRSA competitors can use their rain check when they return to the track on the night of June 29 to kick-off the Vintage Palooza weekend.
The Eric Wagner Memorial Four Cylinder Truck race that was rained out on Friday will be run next week. Rinker Insurance Agency was also slated to sponsor the racing on Friday night and their night will be rescheduled.
Friday night, June 8, at Afton Motorsports Park will be Fan Appreciation Night for the Chambers & O’Hara Open Sportsman and the Butler Auto Sales Crate Sportsman. Joining them on the six division card will be the ZMK Construction Modifieds, The Trophy Guy IMCA Modifieds, Rinker Insurance Agency Street Stocks, and Four Cylinder Trucks.
Pit gates open at 4 p.m. with grandstand gates opening at 4:30 p.m. Hot laps begin at 6 p.m. and the first heat gets the green at 7 p.m. sharp.
