Perry Browne students free fish from captivity

NORWICH – As part of the New York State sponsored program, Perry Browne Elementary students studied and raised trout before releasing them into the wild.

On Tuesday morning, 38 students from the school travelled to Canasawacta Creek and released over 130 trout from captivity.

According to Perry Browne Fifth-Grade Teacher Bruce Williams, the fish had grown to a couple inches in length, thanks to the elementary school students, and the entire program was done at no cost to the school.

“The fish were about 2-3 inches in length, and the students have been feeding, and testing their water to ensure superb results in regards to their survivability,” said Williams.

He said because the program is state sponsored, the fish and materials to care for them were provided to the school for free. He added that the students had an opportunity to feed the fish and observe their physical development over the first few stages of their life cycle.

“The goal of the program is to teach students how they can make an impact on their local ecosystems,” said Williams.

He said for the past five years, releasing fish back into the ecosystem has helped lower the insect population and has made the creek’s water more clear.

Williams said the 600 or more trout that have been returned to the water ways by following the state’s regulations and using its program, has provided an excellent learning experience for the students involved.

The New York State guidelines for the “trout in the classroom,” program states the importance of ensuring the water system is the proper place to release the fish. “If released into the wrong body of water, our small fingerlings can permanently alter an ecosystem,” states the guidelines.

Williams said to accommodate for that potential danger, Perry Browne and other schools located in Oxford and Sherburne which take part in the program, all release their trout into different locations.
