New Berlin considers solar energy usage

NEW BERLIN – After months of planning, a representative from New York Sun, a state solar energy program, came to New Berlin and discussed the benefits of solar energy.

The solar energy seminar was held at 6 p.m.,Thursday, at the Unadilla Valley High School Auditorium, and 12 individuals from the New Berlin community attended.

The main speaker, New York Sun Senior Project Manager Frank Mace, told audience members about how solar panels work, and encouraged them to purchase panels of their own.

“There are two kinds of energy in the sun, there’s thermal energy from the sun’s heat, and there’s light energy in the sun’s light,” explained New York Sun Senior Project Manager Frank Mace.

According to Mace, solar panels work solely off of the sun’s light by using a special crystal and foil that captures the light’s electrons.

“When the light impacts a crystal in the panel, it pushes electrons out of the way, jarring them loose.”

“On the backside of the crystal there are pieces of foil that collect those electrons, creating electricity,” said Mace.

Mace told audience members solar energy is clean, abundant, and if done correctly, cost effective.

“I don’t think there are a lot of downsides to solar energy personally,” he said.

Mace said solar panels no longer require concrete bases, as they can now use poles which provide the same support but are easier to move.

He also said the long-term cost to have the panels installed are at an all-time low due to state and local tax credits.

“If you buy a system and put it on your house, you’ll receive a 30 percent federal income tax credit, and a 25 percent statewide tax credit,” said Mace.

Mace said the savings could apply on a larger scale, if the the town was interested in getting involved.

“However, because the power lines only have a .74 megawatt capacity, the area can only handle a specific amount of solar power being pushed back through the lines,” he said.

He said due to the old lines, the area could only accommodate for approximately 4 acres of solar panels, potentially lowering electric costs for residences by around 10 percent.

“It could cost upwards of a million dollars per power line to increase the grid’s electronic capacity,” said Mace.

At the end of the seminar, Mace advised town leaders in attendance to consider making model laws in the future, to help regulate solar energy and it’s use.
