UV wins back-to-back games over Otsenango Pony League opponents
MOUNT MARKHAM – After being scoreless for the first four innings, Unadilla Valley rallied to bat around the order and tally eight runs in the fifth to secure the 12-7 road win over Mount Markham on Friday.
Three straight walks and a steal allowed UV to put Owen Hill into scoring position early in the inning. With the fourth walk in a row, the visiting team tacked their first run on the scoreboard while keeping the bases loaded for Gavin Bonczkowski.
Bonczkowski then singled on the second pitch of the at-bat, sending a hard ground to right field. His hit led to Jacob Figger scoring the second run of the inning.
Timmy Postma drilled a line-drive to the same side of the field, allowing Dalton Proskine and Dominick Hartwell to continue the scoring rout for the two RBI single.
Following in his teammates’ footsteps was Colin Grant, who hit a deep fly ball into right. His two teammates batted in on the play were Bonczkowski and Postma.
Grant and Brandon Kneale scored later in the inning on a passed ball by Mount Markham’s pitcher. The two of UV’s baserunners crossed the plate for Unadilla Valley’s seventh and eighth run of the frame to make the score 8-5.
UV scored all their runs before recording their first out during the top half of the fifth.
Mount Markham answered in the bottom of the inning, tacking on two more runs for a total of seven in the game at this point.
However, Unadilla Valley responded with three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. The home team was unable to produce any other runs, giving UV their seventh win of the season.
Hartwell led things on the mound for Unadilla Valley, surrendering four hits and five runs over four innings of work. Walking zero batters, Hartwell struck out four.
Mason Beigh was on the hill for Mount Markham. He lasted four innings and allowed two runs on two hits while striking out one.
Ethan Maine and Aiden Deforest entered the game as relief during the final three innings of play. The two combined for three strikeouts and allowed four hits by UV batters.
Postma went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead UV. Hartwell, Bonczkowski and Trent Marinelli each recorded one hit in the win.
Three players stole at least two bases and Dalton Proskine led the way with three. Postma and Grant each had three RBIs while Hartwell had two and Bonczkowski picked up one.
Mount Markham scattered eight hits in the game with Austin Bowman and Charlie Hilts each managing two hits. Bowman recorded three of Mount Markham’s seven stolen bases.
On Thursday, Unadilla Valley topped Edmeston 8-4. UV scored three runs in the opening inning and added five more over the next five trips to the plate.
Postma toed the rubber to start, lasting five innings. In his work on the mound, he threw seven strikeouts and allowed five hits. Postma picked up the win as Edmeston was able to rally for just one run after his time pitching.
Bonczkowski finished the game in relief, ringing up three in the win.
Drew Emrich led UV at the plate, batting 3-for-3 and sent two of his teammates home in the contest. Postma and Bonczkowski recorded two hits each in Thursday’s game.
Garrett Lum and Greg DeVries split time on the hill as each threw three innings for Edmeston. The two combined for six strikeouts.
DeVries had a big day at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs. His teammate Kyle Ough also had flawless day on offense as he went 3-for-3.
Unadilla Valley is now off for the holiday. They will pick action back up at home on July 5 against Greene. First pitch is to be tossed at 6 p.m.
